Please Help A Newbie!

In Lenz's book, on pages 42 and 43:

First, after the RAILS SHOVELL command, I got a ton more output than what the book had listed (not sure if that matters or not).

Second, I'm unable to start up my app on page 43. I enter CD SHOVELL, no problem. I enter RUBY SCRIPT/SERVER, and I get the following error:
./script/../config/boot.rb:29: undefined method 'gem' for main:Object (NoMethodError) from script/server:2

Note: I'm running XP SP2. Thanks a ton in advance!

Are you using InstantRails? Don't.

If you insist you could try: `gem update --system`

I'm using whatever the book tells me to use - remember, I'm a newbie. Is this error familiar to anyone?
