How much memory usage is too much?

In a regular web app, how much memory usage is too much?

I'm eating 3MB with a site of mine and somehow I think that that's a little too much.

For a large application, 8mb per concurrent user is pretty much the max, any higher and you're likely looking at code bloat and lots of in-memory buffering etc.

I've just had similar questions raised about my app. 3mb is not unreasonable. However you can greatly reduce the impact of your app by using caching. Take a look at PEAR::Cache_Lite http://pear.php.net/cache_lite, or for more advanced functionality (the ability to tag cached pages) ZEND::Cache http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.cache.html

The zend option seems to have stemmed from Cache_Lite from what I can tell. It wouldn't surprise me if ZEND::Cache is a progression directly from PEAR::Cache_Lite

well that's two different things. using a page caching system and using a php cache/optimiser are different, running both would pressumably be best, although I'm not an expert with optimisers.
