It is a big joke in town Tourists just love it. It was actually a jail a while back, just to lock up people for one night to sober them up or some such thing.

We are It is on islands often the case. If some person were to do something, the cause-way-bridges can just be raised, no hiding-out possible.

Of course people can always use boats …

I suppose it's the same in any small community. Criminals are cowardly by nature. Britain is an island (and according to the British it is HUUUUGE) and it certainly isn't crime-free.

So, in the event that a cat gets stuck up a tree, do you call out the police/fire brigade from Tampa?

No, we are not that far into the sea. We are a barrier island, one of the chain of islands only separated by a rather narrow bit of water. The causeways connect directly to the mainland. Drawbridges are there to let boats that are tall use the inter coastal waterway. We have our own fire department as well. Hospital is close by in Bradenton. Maps are hard to find in good quality, but this one shows it pretty clearly:
