PHP pages won't load on my local machine

I purchased Kevin Yank's insightful book and followed the instructions for installing PHP and MySQL on my local machine so that I could test my web pages before publishing them. However, when I try to open a .php page, a dialog box appears that asks me to either "open" "save" or "cancel"... when I click "open" an IE window pops up, then disappears and the same "open" "save" "cancel" window appears. I am running Windows XP Professional SP2 with IIS installed and running. Please help!

Ah a most annoying experience, that I have had in the past. A common problem is mysql.

Try running this simple script.

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

Does the problem happen when you run that?

I created a new file named it "test.php" and put in the code you said above. When I tried to open it, I got the same message.

I'm not a Windows person but my guess is that your web server is not executing PHP files and instead is passing them to your browser. Since your browser doesn't know how to process a PHP file, it presents you with the Open/Save/Cancel dialog box.

Maybe this will point you in the correct direction...

When I was writing PHP on my win32 machine, I always used phpdev, it only takes a few minutes to setup and I've never had any problems with it.
