    Creating a horizontal DHTML menu

    Hi everyone,

I got a customer that wants to have a dHTML menu that opnes up horizontally like the one we created for another client of ours. The thing is, this DHTML menu is not DHTML, it's made with Flash. On this particular case, the menu has to be DHTML.

Anyone has an idea where I could find such script?

My menu has to open up on three different layers, all horizontally. Furthermore, it has to convey different color schemes for each sections and it all has to be in text (no images).

Should I shoot myself right away or wait for you people to save me?

Any lead will be greatly appreciated.

    Look for Dynamic Menu Builder

It's a piece of software that builds dHTML menus for you, It's got TONS of options, is VERY cheap (around $60US), VERY fast (a few hours to create the menu system) and very easy to use.

I'm looking more in the lines of a script already on the Web. We unfortuantely won't be able to convince management for such expense even if it's cheap. They are used to us finding solutions from scripts available on the Web. Thanks anyway.

    I'm still opened to suggestions.

you could try dhtmlgod, he usually has stuff and scripts lying around, but depending on what you want I have dmb menus (like creole says very worth the expense) and I am sure that I could knock something up for you and then send you the code...? as a demo maybe? that way you could then play around with code if you wanted? pm me if you want to take further

    good luck otherwise

    Sarah

p.s. also check out hotscripts.com and http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/navigate2.htm and http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/co...outALLone.html and http://popup.jscentral.com/ just a few I had lying around

I would say try to make one yourself. It really isn't that difficult and the menu system like that could be a great experiment.

My favorite is taking a completed project and turning it too oop. It usually ends up 10x better

I believe you should be able to find quite a few on www.DynamicDrive.com.

Dynamic Drive actually is quite a good resource. I've used it many times in the past but unfortunately, they do not hold anything close to what I am looking for this time.

Once I finish it up, I'll probably post it there because they lack that sort of navigation menus. The thing is it will only work in DOM browsers cause I managed to convince my client that forwards compatibility was the way to go.

It's a little yeah for me and a big YEAH for Web Standards!

I'm not totally sure about this but I think CoolMenus at DHTMLCentral opens up horizontally. And finally the latest version (CoolMenus 4.x) seems to be browser cross compatible.

    From the DHTMLCentral:
    - Unlimited submenus
    - 99% Browser compatibility (the web can be so tricky that I can't say 100%)
    - Very customizable
    - Very fast (considering the browser compatibility)

    Try this site...
    http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/hiermenus/

I have used this script before and it is pretty good.

    Thanks Finkmota...

I knew about that one and had used it in the past. However I found it had not the possibility to do what I wanted.

I came up with this one instead which I made up myself with a lot of swearing, pepsi and fun ultimately.

Wow...is it cross browser? If it is then you should most defintely congratulate yourself. That's a layout that I've never seen someone use before. Once you get it tested and get all the kinks worked out, you should offer it on Hotscripts.

    thanks Creole

It is cross browser. As long as your browser is DOM. It works perfectly in NS6+, IE5+ and Opera 6+ (I don't know about Opera 5 because I don't have it).
It explodes completely in NS4, not even displaying.

But honestly, if you ask me I couldn't care less.

I am not supporting NS4 anymore on my projects and this client of ours was convinved by yours truly not to bother with NS4 either.

    Otherwise, it works perfectly everywhere.

I am pretty pleased with myself, I might add.

I intended on presenting it to a few sites as it is true I had never seen done before. It might have been done (most probably), but never had I encountered one (except in flash).

Thanks again for your kind words. I worked damn hard to get it working!
