Can someone point me to a good program for providing free email service to my visitors? (I understand there are programs or scripts that allow me to install free email service as part of my site. Or have I misunderstood?)

Here's a bunch of perl scripts that give you free web-based e-mail:

I went through the process at everyone.net
my host said they made the required changes but everyone.net dosen't reflect the CNAME change.
Now all my mail is in limbo, not sure what to do.
Anyone else have this problem?

It can take up to 48 hours to propagate...if it's more than that, I'd double check with your host.

Sawz,
having exactly the same problem with everyone.net Seems like my DNS is getting fed up with trying to change this stuff...they just can't seem to get it...it feels like I am being ignored. Trying to decide wether to try and actually get it set up or just go back....
Anyway my advice to anyone else thinking of getting the mail service from everyone...be very careful for you may get more than you bargained for muhahahahahaha

It's been three days since I requested dns changes from my host. My mail is still in limbo and I'll probably lose all those messages.
My host says the changes have been made, everyone.net says they haven't.
I believe my host.
Think they'll be pissed if I ask them to put it back the way it was?

Sawz,
Yes, but well I guess that their problem. The key is not to think of the annoyance your putting them through.

i had the same problems with webhosting.com
just let them know what the problem is and let everyone.net know as well. it will get worked out. i just kept e-mailing it all etc. they had that information "hidden" but they unhide it for like 24 hours and i then finished and it worked fine.

You should try bigmailbox.com. You don't need to change the DNS information or MX records. Or you can go to bn3.com. They offer webmail and pop3 service.

Well I think I finally got it squared away, except for the dog ugly url they assigned me.
My host was quite tolerant and changed it yet again, now I'm just waiting on everyone.net to recognize these changes.
At least my mail isn't ending up in a cyber graveyard.

The thing to do if you are having problems is to email Brian -- it's in his companies best interest to help you setup email on your site quickly and without hassles.
His email address is in the sig of his post.

mail problem solved. it seems if i have aol5.0,
aol is my isp (ugh) i can do it that way.
no way on god's green earth i'm gonna install aol5.0 on my computer.
www.cgi-resources.com had a link to a script
that utilizes my host's usr/sbin/sendmail.
works well.
just thought you'd like to know.
and by the way, i e-mailed everyone.net 4 days ago concerning my inability to send-mail. the response i received, i felt, was kinda canned, off the shelf, stock item, you get the picture, an auto-respond kinda message.
i sent them an e-mail on 02/21/2000 @ 6:08:13 PM Eastern Standard Time and i tore them a brand new you know what. www.everyone.net is on the west coast and i live on the east coast. they telephoned me an hour and a half later.
i talked to Brad Wantt, no, i didn't hit the 't' twice.
we had a nice conversation and i'm satisfied with what i am getting for my e-mail clients.
so i'll recomend www.everyone.net for e-mail needs.
