Laptop Question - Which is better?

Ok, I need to get a laptop & now I've got each person telling me theirs is the better laptop & I'm getting confused.

Pls. let me know your thoughts, but only if you know specifically that one unit is better than the other.

    Thanks Michelle

apart from the RAM the 2nd should be better... but I would never buy a second hand laptop from someone I did not know personally ... and even then at that vintage ??.... not much more for a cheap acer or dell which at least will have a warranty (not sure how much use a Dell warranty is but acer are fine)

I can't budget out for a new one, & I DON'T want Vista on the machine.

Do you have first hand knowledge that the 2nd one is better than teh first one?

He said he was going to put another stick of memory in there for me.

He says he sells laptops all the time, he's been doing it for years.

    Thanks

I have repaired more of the former than the latter, now whether thats down to market penetration I really can't say.... to be fair I see far fewer IBM's than dell's hp's etc which are usually toast by the time they get to me.... but forever replacing bios batteries in the thinkpads (though at least it is easy to get at)

I am not suggesting that the seller is a crook, the problem is with laptops you really don't know where they have been and what they have done (how many times dropped, had spillage, overheated etc), nor do people honestly onselling them unless they recondition and give some sort of warranty (even a limited one say 90 days would show faith)

The specs on the second one are better (Except the memory)

Have you looked at http://outlet.dell.com? That's Dell's "Scratch and Dent" store. Doubt you'll find anything that cheap there, but you can find some pretty good deals
