And that's just the public threads. The private forums are filled with someone making a valid suggestion, one person makes a thoughtful reply, then four people post funny images that might possibly have some tangential association to a word quoted in the original post, followed by a furious posting of 2-3 pages of replies to those highly irrelevant images.

    I miss that.

    Off Topic:

On a more serious note... qualifications... I lead the team that deals with blogging (I write for one of the top 40 blogs in the world according to Technorati), forums/communities (I co-own the largest forum for Ruby on Rails), copy writing (I've written for magazines and newspapers and still do some freelance copy writing on occasion), photography (I used to be a professional real estate photographer), video (I went to film school), games (I was a dialogue writer and PR person for a computer game company for about 4 years), and widgets & mashups (that blog I write for is about web 2.0). .

I'm not sure why all that was off topic... hmm.

    Edit:

    Off Topic:

We need an "on topic" tag, so I can add replies that are on topic, when the thread as gone off topic, and still be in a box.

Or maybe I just need to sleep more.

Like i said earlier, point to any comment I made that consists of a personal attack on a mentor, and I would be happy to apologize. If you can't, it would seem you are in fact the one imputing bad motives.

    Mentors:
Thanks to all the mentors that have replied with their qualifications (especially those that have been specific about the professional nature of their qualifications as the original post requested). In my opinion, it has been informative and helpful.

Too bad it didn't start off or end that way. That's right I'm talking about you off-topic picture people!! It would have been nice to just have the thread as a clean resource for the future. Oh well. The "Wild & Wooly Web" is still alive and well in forums.

I'm the reason we don't have this tag

Anyway, as for qualifications: I built my first HTML page on Geocities about 10 years ago, complete with embedded sound clips, ugly backgrounds, and everything else you expected from a 17 year old's first webpage in the 1997 web. I've been programming in some capacity for about 8 years now, and I've been working professionally as a web developer for nearly 6 years, ever since I got out of college. Time at my current job is split between programming, marketing/SEO, and project management (though I really don't post much at all about the last two). I suck at graphic design and make no bones about it, but I like to think I have an eye enough to make decent layouts (good thing I prefer minimalistic styles), and I'm a typography whore. I've been on the staff here almost 5 years, so this is the longest "job" I've had.

I only want to do things if everyone else does it so here goes

I've got a varied background but I will list only my web experience as that is most relevant. I've had a few different jobs as programmers (Java, Php, .NET) but primarily worked for DOD or Department of the Army until last year as a software engineer. I've had my own part-time development business for 4.5 years and I took that full time last fall. Since I'm on the Content team I suppose I should mention I am a wanna-be photographer, camera at the ready. I blog at 4 places right now and am running a podcast where I have the pleasure of interviewing some industry bigwigs.

Let me know if I pass

    New Orleans?

Ok.. I wasn't going to do this but what the heck.. in a light hearted way...

I went to school for multimedia (i'm bad with dates) about 10 years ago? Taught it for a year, worked as a graphic artist (print) for a leading record label for about 5 years and now I work for another company whose clients are Eentercom, Clear Channel... and other corporate media giants doing print and helping out with web stuff.

I'm not qualified to be on a web developer forum as I suck at HTML and CSS and all that (ask Tommy)

Well, by the standards that were set by the graphic work for the 2012 logo for the Olympic Games in London, that would be 400 000 + a bonus of 100%, because it is a 100% better.

So, by that calculation you owe me 800 000. Fork it over

Theft is not acceptable. You have to go to jail then for 800 000 days, you figure out how many years that represents (hint: it will be a record lifespan)

    To the OP:

Mentors are not here in any other capacity than to roam and watch and see that things are conducted orderly. We are not representing sitepoint, nor do we have any kind of power to make decisions on behalf of sitepoint, which is a private entity. All of us are guests here and the mentors are volunteers, elected by volunteer staff.

It is up to them to see who is qualified for a position as a mentor.

I owe you no explanation of who I am or what my qualifications are. I have plenty. Now just take the time and look around you and read what I have written in my serious posts, you will find your answers there.

Not at all. You just need to pay a little more attention to accessibility if you want an 'all clear' sign from me.

After 3 years working on a the www interface for the State of Louisiana Department of Social Services, I am up to my ears in accessibility. It's really tough to make a huge application meet all of these accessibility standards, let me tell you. It probably cost us an additional million bucks, at least, but we got there! It's really amazing to watch disabled people using specialized tools to use the Internet.

    3) I graduated college back in 2000 with a history and classics degree, but had some technical inclinations. I ended up getting a job as the helpdesk at a major industry trade association, right when the "Web Enable Everything" craze really hit. Ended up picking up alot of webby and DBA-type skills to compliment the general IT and server management skills. Currently I spend about half my time architecting, building, maintaining applications and the other half my time doing server management and DBA work.

How far did you have to/try to go? 508 compliance isn't that hard, but at the same time working on a massive set of apps or with people who knew little to nothing about accessibility beforehand would be time consuming no matter what you do.
