    Safari for Windows

I've been reading one of the live-blogs of the Apple WWDC. They just announced Safari for Windows, a free beta. I don't see it on the site yet, but I expect it'll show up today after this keynote.

Jobs showed some benchmarks of Safari rendering HTML and running JavaScript twice as fast as IE, and faster than Firefox. If it renders in Windows the same as on a Mac, at the very least, this'll make it easier to test how a site looks in Safari without buying one.

Will you switch? I'll give it a try.

    Edit:

And now it's available: Safari 3 Public Beta

I've already got Safari, but I would like to see if there are any differences between the two systems. I doubt it but you never know...

Yeah it's free, but nothing's up on the site yet. apple.com/safari just redirects to the OS X version's homepage.

edit: nevermind looks like they updated it!

It's a free beta, apple.com/safari and who knows, maybe we can grow our Safari share in the future, we can sure try."

Gee, yes, but it didn't go well. I installed it on Vista Enterprise, and on first run, the Apple homepage showed up then I double clicked on the title bar to maximize the window. I then got "Unknown Program needs permission..." UAC dialog, then Safari crashed entirely. I'll try again...

Worked on the second start, maybe some kind of first-run operation didn't go well. I dislike that it uses the Apple UI rather than Aero like every other program (window border, title bar, menu, scrollbars, etc). Probably a good move if they want to get some Mac converts off this, but hey, I can test in Safari on Windows, I'm happy

Yep, installed the XP version. It looks a lot like the Mac version, which to me is a plus for better text rendering, but a minus in that it looks really out of place on Windows. Seems to be fully functional otherwise but I've only been using it for 5 minutes so I haven't put much stress on it.

edit: I can't figure out what triggers accesskeys, but it's not any usual Mac/Windows shortcuts. That's kind of annoying...

Hey, that alignment glitch I remember from the Browsercam screenshot... so it does render like it does on the Mac. Now I can fix it without waiting 15 minutes between screenshots!

There Is A God!!! There Is A God!!! There Is A God!!!

So, uh... just out of curiosity, how big is the download for XP users? (I'm on dialup, folks.)

    The download is 8,165 KB.

It'll be very interesting to see what piece of the browser market it eats away at. My predictions it'll eat away at IE a bit, but more at Mozilla. Not much at Opera, because Opera fans are too die-hard for that (see "why do you not use Opera?" thread).

I'm still sticking to Firefox for my normal browsing (reason: see the "why do you not use Opera?" thread) but this is a blessing for testing. Installation in XP went fine. I agree with Vinnie in that it looks out of place on Windows. Mistake, I think - at the very least the title bar, main menu and scrollbar should be left in Windows regalia. Even Opera I think changes the UI too much. As for the text, I don't like it. It's a bit blurry and too thick.

The SnapBack feature seems to work in a silly way. After clicking through several pages, clicking the orange thing in the address bar takes me back to Google's front page, not the search results page I came from.

Only if you download the version that comes bundled with QT, otherwise no. I did, just because I hadn't updated Quicktime in a while on this computer.

That's what I figured. Just wanted to make sure beforehand. I'm over at my brother's house right now (had to return a couple DVDs I borrowed).

When I get home, I'm definately downloading this and giving it a spin.

I think I've found a bug. If I have several tabs open and I drag a link and drop it on an existing tab, the tab's title doesn't become the title of the page it's opening, instead it adopts the text that was in the link. The little grey box that appears containing the link's URL is pretty cool, though it might annoy me after a while.

And I hear that Konqueror may not be too far behind with KDE 4.0 coming to Windows as well (though that'll get its own thread once it's been confirmed, of course).

Is it just me or does Safari make all the text blurry? It's driving me nuts.

I downloaded it and tried it... now I'm done. I'll keep it on my system to test out my sites in safari but I'm not going to use a browser that gives me a head ache.

Do you have ClearType turned off in Windows? It takes some getting used to antialiasing when you've never had it. I only made the switch along with Vista. It looks like Safari uses its own antialiasing.. I'm not sure.. just looks a bit different.
