I have the feeling as well that inflation is much higher than the Gov figures tell us. Just shopping for groceries makes you aware of it. It is a slow and creeping thing.

    Yes.

Since we are mighty powerless at this point to do something about it, I was just sitting here and musing how much of the money people save is really not being multiplied because of this inflation. The interest rates are not high enough to make up for this inflation. And how in a way what you save over a lifetime to support yourself later on, is not going to be worth much at all.

PS. …and compounding is not that great to make up a lot, it does of course, but the impression seems that it is higher than it actually is in reality.

That is exactly why you should only keep money for daily expenses. Penny saved is penny wasted. The surplus is a negative factor. But of course, it is an art to spend a dollar and have it come back with its friends. But that's how this thing works.

The BBC recently published an article stating that house prices in the UK were on average 10 times higher than what people can afford. That's why a lot of people in the UK never really get to own their house because they're still paying off the mortgage thirty years after they first "bought" it. And often they sell the house before they've paid it all off, simply transferring the mortgage to the new buyers. So at the end of the day the banks win.

When they're not pounding the snot out of each other in the dugout, having the manager kick umpires in the shins, they're losing baseball games.

    I want my money back.

Don't they always lose? Or is that the Red Sox?

No, that would be the Detroit Tigers. Although lately they seem to have forgotten how to. At least they remembered last year when they were playing the Cardinals in the World Series (that's right, St. Louis didn't win the Series - Detroit simply remembered how to lose ).

It is funny to me how excited people get about sports teams. I have never aligned myself with a team, I alway root for the ones that are best, they deserve to win?

I often do, there's always a sympathy for one or other team of sports I follow. Be it a home team, a favorite player or how good they play. The game pleasure is ten times better that way.

Right now I'm totally into NBA finals. Guess what team I root for and why?

But you like basketball, don't you? At least I got an impression you did, as you said you used to play it. It is true, though, that there is a big difference between the European basketball and the NBA basketball. But those differences make it even more interesting.

Yes I did play it when I was young, but I am not into watching sports at all. Don't forget I had a very intense life with my work, there was never any time to be even remotely interested in that kind of thing. And when you stop watching it, it fades. Other things take over as priorities.

I can imagine that. Don't really see that happening to me, though, the second national religion stuff and all. Part of the life since early days. But you never know.

No you can not predict things. Life is that way. Suddenly you get swept up into a new and exciting direction and a lot of what you thought as absolutely essential will just slowly fade away. I had many things like that happen to me.

I remember I used to be like that with wrestling. I used to follow WWF religiously.

These days the whole thing just seems retarded to me.

I was flipping through the channels the other day and caught a glimpse of it now. When wrestling reaches the point of having Donald Trump on there as a character... then you know it's time to click the remote.

Too bad they did not shave the guys head, that would have been so much fun. I saw an interview with him once, on a high rise in New York he stood, the wind just pushing and blowing. Don't you know it, that hair stood like concrete, it was being pushed as a unit sideways. One of the funniest things that I have seen.

I can agree with that, its happened to some of my interests that I no longer have time for. What's important is that you focus on what you want to do and keep going forward wherever that takes you.

Yes Andy, and so it will continue. Priorities shift, you discover new things that are more important at that point in time. But some things always stay: your core values, once they are established.

And some people just drift aimlessly, but that kind of drifting will be very visible later in life, because you get shaped by the choices you make. What also shows clearly is when you were not drifting, goal oriented. There is a different air about that kind of person…

So we come full circle back to drifting

How would you define the air of someone who is goal orientated?

Self confident, taking charge kind of a person. Knowing what to do in crisis situations, calm, not getting upset about ignorant statements, in control. Using reasoning verses emoting. I am such a person.

I think that you mistook the term goal oriented with the term as in: "being full of yourself" Being goal oriented has nothing to do with other people, it is your own drive to be the best at what you do, not for the sake of making an impression onto another person, but for your own satisfaction.
