We must have had the worlds smallest in Birmingham here in England a while back. People were scared more because they're extremely rare here, and it represented a change in climate more then anything.

    Oh dear, hope your alright...

Oh man, for the last couple of days I've been helping out my flatmate with this IE6-only application for his work. Heavy javascript usage because everything has to be on a single HTML page and there's no server-side scripting. Anyway, the original person who did it, an intern, had precious little experience with web dev and was doing it in Front Page (the company actually paid £140 for the POS). She'd been at it for weeks and it was atrocious and in total there were over 50 files totaling 3MB. The HTML page alone was 970KB.

So in two days I re-did it completely in Crimson Editor, it works and looks pretty. Total is 71KB in three files, the HTML is valid, semantic and properly indented as is the CSS. The Javascript is unobtrusive and if I say so myself quite nice.

I love this and I feel quite smug. And horrified that people still think Front Page is something you would design a website in.

Actually, I also feel a bit annoyed that this multinational corporation in the top 10 of the Fortune 500 would use their intern to do something she knows nothing about and is not actually there to do (she's supposed to be learning how to make the corporation enormous amounts of money), instead of hire a web developer for a couple of days. Apparently the reasoning was "just to avoid the red tape" and because they thought it was a simple task, that designing a website "can't be that hard". Morons. They started off in Microsoft Word FFS.

^ It happens everywhere. Frontpage and all that crap.

My sister is responsible for the website for the charity she works for. Thankfully she has me to point out interesting points here and there, like accessibility and other such things. They wouldn't buy any expensive software they said, so instead bought dreamweaver and a CMS from some unknown company for many thousands, then expecting her to 'pick it up'. They didn't even listen to her when she mentioned Open source CMS. It's been a long road so far... and I have knowledge of some stupid CMS that will never make it as it's retarded, and based on .net. Not itself bad, but just the comp' that pukes this out as a real 'product;.

Hold on. They said they didn't want to buy expensive software yet sank $400 into a copy of Dreamweaver?

Charities seem to waste a lot of money, it seems to me. The people that harass you to donate money to Charity X in the street sometimes earn £8-10 an hour, which is shocking considering that bartenders and other people in relatively unskilled work like that earn about £6 an hour.

We once had a begger here, who had a 2 string guitar and he'd obviously given up a long time ago so he used to just stand there in the centre of town, strum his 2 strings and sing in a lazy monotone voice the single line "Money for drugs" over and over.

It's like he had been tortured to tell the truth, only by time, abuse and weather rather then a terrorist or government!

I'd be more inclined to give him money than the tramps who want money "for the bus fare" or "for a bed for the night". Not that I would anyway, I'd rather give the money to a charity that will guarantee the man gets food/shelter/rehab instead of drugs.

I *hate* the charity solicitations I get by mail with an actual nickel showing in the window of the envelope. Not only are they wasting an extra $0.05 per mail by sending people nickels when asking for donations, but they make it illegal to throw out their mail since throwing out money is illegal. You're forced to open it, and feel bad about the waste of the nickel that charity was given by some other donor that they just gave to you instead of someone in need.

Showing me you'll waste my money guilting people instead of helping people isn't going to get my donation.

Back to the topic of this thread.. hmm.. I went to dinner tonight at Benihana in Seattle with 7 other MS employees I'm friends with. Racked up a $700 tab, charged it to BillG, yet somehow I came home hungry...

The nickel thing, agreed on. What a blatant attempt to pull on your strings.

Just drifting in to say: Hi

It has been a mighty hot summer here, not over yet either. I can hardly wait for the cool breezes to come in again. It has been too long, keeps a person locked in the house too much.

    Hi,

You'd be glad to know that it's almost an autumn here. It's about 5° C as we speak, and even though it's usually near 20° C and sunny at daytime, the weather is cool. Best time of the year, might say, not hot and not yet cold.

I've no idea, but I think there should be at this time already. I don't really do that stuff, especially when the city is where I usually am

autumn here by now, it's 1° C outside right now but it has been as low as -3° C.

autumn is such a fantastic time of year, when the colors seems to burn into each other.. competing against each other, teasing each other, and then when you think it's at it's most beautiful, it explode further into a fantastic fairy like firework of beauty which sometimes makes me think a god must have created all this...

I feel lucky to be able to be here seeing all this.. especially when thinking about all those people going through life with eyes wide open but at the same time so blind..

and since I'm able to see and recognize all this beauty, I really am rich
