I've started to use that desaturate function as you said, it's a good way of looking at a blank canvas.

I need to get some books on the History of art out from our extensive library. I realised that I'm just not using my employer's library like I should. Working for a university has benefits, 30+ books for 3 months at a time.

There is also something else you can do. Look at photographs and identify why you like them, independent of the subject matter, just for the graphic and or color effect.

You will find quickly that you like the ones with contrast best. Contrast does not mean only sharp delineation between the objects, it can be very subtle, a fog scene maybe. But a fog scene having only fog is pretty boring. So you look for the one that has maybe a building or a mountain rising out from it.

That brings the element of photography into web design, which it is very
    much a part of.

I like trying my hand at photography, and trying unusual things.

Here's an example of a perspective I tried to capture in a unique way.

One thing that bugged me, was the lampost in this pic, still the top area
    was quite nice.

Yes it is nice. But remember, in photography, the perspective is never true, it gets distorted.

And you have a wonderful example for a little project right there: Take the light out, repair the picture, make it look like it never was there. This is actually a rather easy one to do it with. Have you done things like that yet?

The lamp-pole is nice for scale, though.

You have something to compare the height of the building to.

Don't under-estimate the value of things like that.

I agree with the scale. Very good point. I mentioned to Andy the removal because it is one of those projects where you can learn to use PS for photo touch ups, clean ups etc.

Not too difficult for a budding graphic guy.

I have actually tried many times to rid the picture of the lamp post. I find it difficult to get the smoothness of the building texture replicated in place of where the post was. Still trying though. I in fact did this for another photo which I took, that had a security camera in a park. Was very easy as I was able to blend it in to the greenery of the background. Somehow, I lost this photo (??? where's it gone?) But I have the original so will probably do that one again.

The slick surfaces are the hardest. What I do in cases like this, I work the surfaces from brake to brake, in this case it would be all the window panes affected.

There is a trick in painting, we all do not have to worry about this one on the computer with the perfect gradations/gradients. When you paint an ombré by hand, it is almost impossible to get a slick surface. But the remedy is to paint a *frame* around it. Like on a sky, you would set dark foliage around it, on a glossy pain finish like a car, you set into it a reflection.

Those elements, through a clever placement, will fool the eye. The surface looks perfect.

Back to drifting, I just got a new cell phone ( I know we call them mobiles here in the uk, but since the rest of the world disagrees i'll be plain )

Reason was that it has a very good camera on it, and I do like the idea of having a music player, camera, radio etc on one device. Since nobody calls me on it, It's not really going to affect my health, (friends KNOW i'm more accessible on email anyway.. I always have it on silent... if find these 'tones' intruding)

So, yes with a better camera i'm hoping to snap better pics. Pitty this kind of thing has put photo-shops out of business.

    Great!

A black smith is also almost out of business. That is the way to human race moves, ever new: leaving the old behind.

I'm hoping someone picks up the digital camera I snuck onto my wedding registry... I don't have a camera and it would be nice to take pictures on my honeymoon.

Go ahead and get one, Ulrike. Just because you have it doesn't mean you have to answer it and they are good to have in emergencies. My kids look at me like I'm crazy when the land-line phone rings at home right next to me on the desk and I don't even acknowledge it but I refuse to have that Pavlovian response.

I know, we are at the door to get one right now. We do have a problem with reception here, the tower is not good enough or something like that. And the emergency of course is a valid point. I thought to get one of those prepaid throw away things only for that purpose.

We are thinking of getting the iPhone, but not right away, there are always kinks in the beginning. That would also serve as access to the internet, my husband needs that when he talks to clients. A two with one sort of thing. It fits the image of a designer

By the way, I also let the phone ring when I do not want to be interrupted, no pressure on me there. But it is really hard when you run a business, you never know if a customer wants to talk.

I am, I am. I have done nothing on my own site for months and haven't even created any promo graphics. This weekend, I promise. This was the kick in the butt that I needed; thanks Shaun.

Happy birthday! It's my nephew's birthday as well; though I suspect you're a good bit older than he is. (He's 6.)

I got a new bicycle today. It's second hand, I got it for £150. RRP is £550 so I'm quite happy with it. I've been using public transport for the last few months and I'm so happy I'm cycling places again. Though the hill I live on doesn't make the last leg home very nice...

That is sooooo great! Our bikes always rust or corrode because of the salty air
