Prototype.js and another JS library are conflicting
Hey guys.
On my website, I'm currently using the prototype.js library and another javascript.js library. For some reason, they are interfering with each other and I get errors on my website. Some functions only work if I take out one library and leave the other one.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Prototype relies heavily on modifying core objects of javascript. Therefore, prototype is very likely to conflict with other libraries.
There is probably no easy solution to your problem.

The best solution is probably to ditch prototype. However, since you may already depend on it, that may not be very practical. That leaves you with only one solution; To re-write the other javascript library to code around prototype's quirks.
Which is the other library, you're trying to use?

Which libs do you use?
I tried prototype with X-Lib (see cross-browser.com) and it works like a charm.

Here's an example: say you have data stored in an object literal, and you iterate through it like this:
Code JavaScript:for(var i in mydata) { //do something with mydata[i] }
Now you might think you know in each case what mydata[i] is likely to contain - because you created it, right? But then along comes prototype, and it does things like this:
Code JavaScript:Object.prototype.someCustomFunction = function() { ... }
Now, whenever you iterate through your object literal (through any Object instance), that custom function will show up as a member. Suddenly your data is not predictable. And that's why prototyping native objects is not good.
In this example there is a workaround:
Code JavaScript:for(var i in mydata) { if(typeof mydata[i] != 'function') { //mydata[i] is not a method } }
But the real lesson here is not to use libraries which prototype native objects, ie, don't use prototype, because you shouldn't have to think about things like this.

Well, we're talking about library conflicts here and every library author is aware of what "enumerable" and "own properties" are, so that's not an issue.

I totally fail to see the connection. Either you know something I don't, or we're talking completely by each other. In javascript, you can iterate over an objects properties with this construct:
Code:var obj = {foo:1, bar:2}; for (var key in obj) { console.log(key); }
Code:Object.prototype.cux = 1; var obj = {foo:1, bar:2}; for (var key in obj) { console.log(key); }

the website was originally designed to rely on a javascript.js library. Then I wanted to add have an option where users can expand their content and retract it by clicking on a little arrow. So I had to use prototype.js for that.
I also noticed that if in the index.html, I define one library before the other one, then all the functions work but one, and if I reverse them, again, all of them work, but there is again one that doesn't.
Thank you guys for your help, i've been stressing out with this for the past few days and I have no idea what to do.
here is the javascript.js code:

you're right, but I really have no experience with JS, so that was the best I could come up with. Basically, I needed the library for 2 things:
<td class="prooption" onmouseover="this.className='prooptiona'" onmouseout="this.className='prooption'">
which does a mouse roll-over highlighting
and
<div class="proheaders"><img src="images/icons/minus.gif" class="showstate" onclick="expandcontent(this, 'sc1')" alt=""/>
which does the expand and retract option

horatiub, sorry for stealing the thread, I'll try to answer your questions first
you pretty much have it done. This code should be enough
<div class="proheaders"><img src="images/icons/minus.gif" class="showstate" onclick="expandcontent(this, 'sc1')" alt=""/>
which does the expand and retract option
Code:<script> function toggle(img, div) { if(typeof(div) == "string") div = document.getElementById(div); if(div.offsetHeight == 0) { div.style.display = "block"; img.src = "minus.gif"; } else { div.style.display = "none"; img.src = "plus.gif"; } } </script> <img src="images/icons/plus.gif" class="showstate" onclick="toggle(this, 'sc1')"> <div id="sc1">blah</div>

stereofrog, no problem
from you guys having differences and discussing them, that's how we learn something
ok, so you're saying that the first code should be enough for the mouse over thing?
I'll try to use the second code you have posted to create the toggle.
thank you for helping me out

You can use hasOwnProperty to ignore prototypes:
Code JavaScript:Object.prototype.cux = 1; var obj = {foo:1, bar:2}; for (var key in obj) { if(!obj.hasOwnProperty(key)) { continue; } console.log(key); }
However I've just discovered that hasOwnProperty is not support in Safari 1.3, so in practise you actually have to do this:
Code JavaScript:Object.prototype.cux = 1; var obj = {foo:1, bar:2}; for (var key in obj) { if(typeof obj[key] == 'function') { continue; } console.log(key); }
