Also check out http://useit.com/ by Jakob Nielsen. Whether you hate him or love him, he does have some good tips.

If you want a book, get Don't Make Me Think.

OK, I have far too many books on usability, and I won't even count the thousands of papers, articles and favourites.

Here are some books on my shelf which I still pick up now and then:

    User Centred Web Development
    Jonathan Lazar

    Don't Make Me Think
    Steve Krug

    Designing Web Usability
    Jakob Nielsen

    Web Navigation
    Jennifer Fleming

    Information Architecture
    Rosenfield/Morville

    Homepage Usability
    Jakob Nielsen

    Human Computer Interaction
    Jenny Preece

Hope that helps you, I could go on forever. You might also want to check out some of my articles on SitePoint!

I'll second Nicky on one of her reccommendations:

"Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krug is an amazing book. I've probably purchased 50 books on web design and usability, and it is my favorite, HANDS DOWN.

He keeps it sweet and to the point - no "long winded passages" of blah to worry about. He give a fresh approach to usability and references some of the top sites. Definately a must-have.

Make sure you buy it from his link at www.stevekrug.com so he gets a little more commission. He deserves it.
