Just read two pages of very worthy links to sites full of information about how to code, mark up, and make things using graphics packages, but nothing about how to DESIGN.

I wrote a set of 60 tutorials on the essentials of web design, which should make useful reading for everyone involved in making web sites. Please check it out at http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com and let me know what you think.

Also, Web Page Design for Designers (http://www.wpdfd.com) is a useful resource.

    And, A List Apart (http://www.alistapart.com)

Hi, I'm new here. Looks like I might be here a lot, seems like a great site and have just ordered a Sitepoint book.

Anyway, http://www.webthang.co.uk has been invaluable for beginners tutorials.

Their easy-to-follow "Getting Started with ASP in Dreamweaver MX" tutorials were a godsend for a beginner like me, and there are some friendly and very helpful people posting in the forums.

Arrow Tutorial: Avoid forcing links to open in a new window

Actually you should avoid forcing links to open in a new window or popups (such as with the "target" attribute or with JavaScript).

Why shouldn't you? And what if you still want to do so?

See here an article I published on my web site yesterday:
    http://www.webnauts.net/new_window.html

Your feedback would be kindly appreciated!

You've got some good content in there, Ronny, but what's going on with your layout? That 'browse by subject' bit looks like a list to me

    Thanks for your feedback, Alex!

    Off Topic:

I assume I can use a SELECT there instead and put the neat alphabetically-ordered list in a "site map" for the SE, but IMHO it will be harder to use for my visitors. But please correct me if I'm wrong (we can continue this in PM)

I am not seeing anything about the actual process of starting a professional site. This sitepoint article is excellent but it will be nice if there more like this article:

Arrow M tutorial: Skip Navigation Links are Important

Providing links that allow the user to skip directly to content, bypassing the navigation, enhances the accessibility of your web site. This is recommended for blind or visually impaired users, people who use screen readers, and also for text-browsers, mobile phones and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants).

    Great Links!

I am a beginner webdesigner. I can do HTML and a bit of basic javascript but not much else. I am thinking about learning PHP. Does anyone know of a site where you can simply copy PHP scripts and fiddle around with them, instead of having to start from scratch?
