what exactly are cookies and how can you use them. Can you store data in them ? are they linked to specific pages that drop them?

A cookie is a small text file that is saved on the users computer, it is only readable by the same domain that put it there, it can only read back the data that it wrote there, so everything you read about cookies getting data from your system is not true. They can be used to store user settings etc, but should not be used for sensitive data without encoding as it is only a text file. Also it should be remembered that the user has the ability to block cookies being stored on their computer so your scripts should allow for this and not just crash out.

This gives a good oversight on cookies
