    Hi --

(I know similar posts have been around but can't seem to find applicable ones to my question)

I'm developing a community for actors and, obviously, will be adding a bulletin board. I am willing to spend up to $100 for one andaren't sure where to drop my money!

ubb is now up to $199! Is vBulletin.com any good? I really want a good quality one worth the value...!

    Thanks for any feedback!

    Joshua

Sitepoint has plans to convert from UBB to vBulletin. It is very good.

I would say if you know how to code you should definitely write your own BB since you will be able to more easily integrate it into your own site.

Otherwise both UBB and vbulletin seem to be pretty good.

    Thanks for your replies...

Well then, if vBulletin is good enough for SitePoint.... my decision is made!

vbb is a good choice. it's fast and reliable. it's a bit harder to set up, but ieasier to run long term.
but of course there aren't only ubb and vbb, there are also ub2k (ultraboard 2000), dc, bigtalker (free), phorum (not too good, but free) and some more, that i can't think of right now.
but if you want to avoid installing a board yourself, use ezboard or ultraboard (not the same as the above mentioned ub2k).

vBulletin in my opinion is the best (and cheaper than UBB; 160$). At my site I use vBulletin lite because yet I don't have that much money to but the full license. When I gather the money together I would buy vBulletin rather than UBB.

But try out the lite edition of the BB first to make sure it works on your servers.

vbb is far superior to ubb

vbb uses php and mysql which is much faster than what ubb uses. Also ubb is very technical to set up and vbb is very very easy. I spent days trying to get ubb to work on my server, I spent minutes getting vbb to work.

And the best part is you can customize the free vbb alot more than you can customize the free ubb.

    Just for the record...

It is not "vbb" - it's "vB" or "vBulletin"

I personally have vBulletin installed; it's a total dream...5 minutes to get it up and running (not including color and template customization of course)...and much faster/efficient than UBB.

As for Luzer's comments: yes, if you have the skills for it, it may make sense to code your own, but obviously most of us can't do this...and people like me (who might be able to) would still put a lot of time into it, and obviously the final product would be a bit inferior when compared to a honed script like vB.

Well, it seems unanimous! As I said before, I will now confidently purchase and use vBulletin for my site.

Thanks for all the input. (and, for the record, I don't have the skills to code my own board! )

This might be a bit late, but I just wanted to add my two cents.

I'm running vBulletin, converted from UBB.

    I love it!

Ok, that's all. Just another testimonial.
