kinda odd, don't you think, that an announcement for a product touting such an awesome technology doesn't actually use that technology itself

makes ya wonder if it's gonna be another roaring success like microsoft bob or that paper clip thingy

Funny, if you go to silverlight.com you get a page that was built on a Mac...

OK, it's not gut bustingly funny, but it is slightly mirth-full.

That they think we aspire to a Minority Report UI, ignorant of the fact that Tom Cruise is out of favour.

Well, the video is all sound and no picture in Safari. Very funny when they say in their FAQ:
Macintosh OS X 10.4.8 or later will be supported for both Power PC-based and Intel-based hardware via a Universal Binary.
It has yet to be proven that intelligence has any survival value.

I was wondering the same thing, the whole video doesn't make sense to me. If they where hoping to convince me to use their product with that video, then they better try again.

Microsoft needs to stop worrying about producing things other people have done very well already (MS anti-spyware, Zune, Silverlight off the top of my head) because they invariable release them far too late and of far too low quality. I suppose the only success they've had other than Windows and Office is the Xbox.

As for Silverlight, I don't see the point. Flash is already fairly wonderful from a flexibility perspective (you can do pretty much anything with it) and pretty much everyone has it. Bringing this into the market will most likely just bring more headaches for web designers along with it.

EDIT: The first time I tried to play that video, FF crashed. The second time, I got prompted to download wvc1dmo CAB even though I can play WMV properly on other websites. In addition, I'm used to playing video with those nice convenient Flash interfaces like on NY Times or YouTube which are less resource-intensive and more reliable than the horrible WMP plugin.

    Can't say I'm impressed!

Before viewing the video I had absolutely NO IDEA what Silverlight does, thinking it was poised to be some kind of Adobe Flash "killer".

Now that I've watched the video, I still have absolutely NO IDEA what Silverlight does, but I also missed my bus.

    Thanks, Microsoft.

Silverlight, or WPF/E as it was known is real, real slick IMHO. Check out my blog post on a recent demo for some better explanation.

Actually, if you look in the bottom right corner it says there will be a site utilising it on 30th April.

Anyone want to start opening bets as to whether it actually works then?

    It works: http://www.windowsvista.si/

Note: site in Slovenian, but you get the idea. You need to get the plugin first (http://msdn.microsoft.com/wpfe/)

Did you forget to mention new Microsoft Expressions. It's a wysiwyg program that touts itself as being standards based -- guess 'compliant' was really too much of stretch. What I found most amusing is that yesterday I got an
"Expression training coming to a city near you" in my junk snail mail.

Now if it's so great and so easy to use, why do they need to send out trainers. By the way-- the bloated code it generates is filled with javascript (oops 'jsscript') that starts with "FP-". I wonder what FP stands for?

Oh now you really got me going!

Did you see the recent 'critical update' that suggested you download a third party software to determine whether your copy of windows is legal? Good grief! I imagine those who own illegal copies of windows know it and those who purchased it as part of their os or from a reputable vendor know that as well. But of course... none of the information gathered from your computer will be sent to Microsoft. Yeah, right.

No, critical updates never ask you to download third-party software.

Now, I am no fan of the windows genuine advantage tool. But activation and other such "features" are part of life now.
