    Question Wordpress categories and rss syndication

    I tried to figure it out on Wordpress support forums, but nobody seems to know how to do it -- although it IS possible...

    This is what I'm trying to figure out.

    I'm planing to have 2 navigation menus, one just above the fold and one on the sidebar of the page.

    Now, I have a parent directory called 'Authors' and lots of sub-categories with authors' names (ex. Tony, Rohn etc.). There are also other categories like 'Poems', 'Sonets' etc.

    So far so good. Now the problem is that I want that on the fold menu there would be shown only sub-categories from 'Authors' parent category, hiding all the other categories. And on the sidebar there would be shown all the categories except the 'Authors'.

    Anyone has an idea how to do this? :\

    And another thing....

    I'm looking for a plugin that will show a list of recently published posts on other blogs.

    The point that the list should be, let's say, of 10 newest posts, even if there are 100 updated blogs at the same time.

    I was searching wordpress support forums but couldn't find anything similar to that.

    FoFI (http://thecodepro.com/development/fofi/fofi.phps) seems to do the job, but the site is down, BDP RSS Aggregator (http://www.ozpolitics.info/blog/?p=87) only shows posts that were updated today, or if you choose to show most recently updated ones, it lists only one newest post (or am I doing here something wrong?)

    Can anyone help me out with this?

    Thanks in advance, guys!

    Hello

    This is for the Author child list:
    PHP Code:
    <?php wp_list_categories('orderby=name&show_count=1&use_desc_for_title=1&child_of=cat_number'); ?>
    You just need to change the &child_of=cat_number to match the Author category just change cat_number. It's at the very end.

    This is for the sidebar:
    PHP Code:
    <?php wp_list_categories('orderby=name&show_count=1&exclude=cat_number'); ?>
    Again just alter the cat_number to match the number for the Author category. It's at the very end.

    Edit: Not sure about the RSS plugin.

    I have not tested these. If this does not produce the results you desire just ask again, or you can look here for more reference.

    Hope it helps.

    Ok, I got the answer to the first question. It's really simple:

    PHP Code:
    <?php wp_list_cats('child_of=xxx'?>
    Where xxx is the category ID of your parent category!

    Now all I have to do is to find the right plugin for "Recently updated" section. Anyone wanna help me out?

    Johnny Gulag Thanks for the answer!

    Any chance you know the plugin for recently updated blogs? Or at least can tell me if they have a specific name so I can google them up?
