Hi, I've been a long time FP97,98,2000 user.
I now would like to learn more about what goes on behind the wysiwyg gui. What HTML editor do you us?
Would you recommend it?
Is there such a thing as an HTML editor and wysiwyg combo? If so, does it work well?
I want to learn, but I want to keep my cost for another software program under $200.

I use HomeSite 4.5 to do all of my editing, I don't use the WYSIWYG bit though, I use it mainly for the syntax highlighting and the project management.

I use Dreamweaver, Homesite, UltraEdit, and Edit Pad.
Dreamweaver, from Macromedia, is a very good WYSIWYG program, and does allow you access to your source code. Costs about $200 I think.
Homesite, from Allaire, has both WYSIWYG and text editing features, although I pretty much just use it as text editor. This comes bundled with the Windows version of Dreamweaver and complements it quite nicely.
EditPad is a Notepad replacement and is nice for simple text editing.
Personally, I think there is nothing wrong with using WYSIWYG editors if that is what works for you. I find myself moving back and forth between the different programs. However, if you're looking to add scripts to your site pr you want more control over your source code, it would probably be good to get something besides a WYSIWYG.
FrontPage lets you edit the source code, although some people complain that it modifies your code; however it has not been a problem for me thus far.
If you're looking for something a bit different, hop on over to http://www.EvrSoft.com and grab the latest copy of 1stPage - it allows you to view/edit source code, add little rollovers, effects and images, tables, etc...and preview the results easily...

Well you have a hardcore Frontpage hater here, so obviously I don't use or recommend the program. I use either Notepad or EditPlus which is basically Notepad or steroids. Oh, the URL: www.editplus.com
...And you have a Hardcore FrontPage 2000 lover here so I would most certainly recommend it to everybody!! Actually a point that is often forgotten is that you get a great graphic program too. (Microsoft Image Composer) It has a great ease of use and allows you to make graphics fast. And you get the two together for less the price than DW3 and for half the price of DW3 and FireWorks together.
PS: JUST TO LET YOU GUYS KNOW: FP2000 is totally customizable. You can set off the annoying HTML reformating (although not recommended for beginners). All those things are located in the 'Tools' menu.
Ugh, I can't stand PSP 7...PSP 6 is great though, much easier to understand. The great thing about it is that I was able to open it for the first time and have some text with a drop shadow created within a couple of minutes...not so with PSP 7; they've changed a system that was working just fine!

I use notepad to do all my programming and design, and macromedia fireworks for the graphics. But I've heard Dreamweaver 3.0 is really good.
Anybody know anything about Macromedia UltraDev? It's supposed to be cool. Never tried it.
Elledan: PSP 6 Really is not worth it. I had ti for a while and it really isnt that great. It has cool built in pictures, but other than that...nothin. Go with macromedia fireworks 3, its the best.
Uggghh, Microsoft Image composer is one of clunkiest pieces of software ever, it is even slow on my PC (Dual 550, 256MB RAM), whereas Photoshop and Macromedia Fireworks both fly along nicely.

Uhm... That's exactly the problem... On my system (Celeron 400, 64 MB RAM, Daewoo CB652M-LX MainBoard, Voodoo 3 3000) Fireworks doesn't run... Else I'd love to try it.

Another TOOL that goes hand in hand with any stiebuilder prog. is Adobe Image Ready. Comes with PS5.5. With Image Ready you can create advance interfaces with JAVAsript the export it in HTML. All you have to do is copy and past!
I'm with Christophe: FrontPage is fine as long as you don't use the themes, extensions, webbots or shared borders basically. Saves me a buttload of time in basic table/layout creation...and it took me very little time to get used to it, while Dreamweaver is a bit less user-friendly in my opinion. It's a good program, but I think the learning curve is greater.

You can also read the review of FP2k at WebmasterBase. I've read it too and I'm glad that I don't use it, although I must say that it has really improved since FP97/98, so maybe in version 2001...

Microsoft Image Composer is slow? On my AMD450 with 64mbRam it works very quickly unlike Photoshop. It is a great program to quickly make a graphic or even to make more advanced graphics. I like how a person can adjust the working space just by moving some lines. In PhotoShop and other programs you always have to do Modify-image-etc etc.
Ok PhotoShop is stronger but it doesn't allow somebody to make the same images in the same amount of time.

Really? I have less computing power (Celeron 366) and the same amount of memory and not as good a graphics card as you do, and I run Fireworks all the time.
Ok! I bit the bullet and went with Dramweaver! I just started with it, but
it looks like it has everything I want
from wysiwyg and coding requirements!

(I still have FP2000, and I did think 70% of what it did was great. It's just a bit to Microsoft biased for me to fight while learning more about the various cosing languages.)

That's not exactly what I mean: When I start Fireworks, it just says 'internal error' and the program stops loading. This is very irrating, especially since I seem to be one of the few unhappy guys on this planet who share this problem Life's hard...
Luckely, I still have PSP 7 and I'm sure that the upgraded version of MS Paint, that you get with FP2k, never will come close to PSP and PhotoShop.
