Is it a good idea to use an external javascript file to create the header of a website? Is external javascript well supported? I'm doing this to make updating the header much easier. It's kinda like SSI I guess.

I thought of that too, but it just wouldn't work... I think that was really weird.. SSI is much better I think...

My server doesn't support SSI. PLus, it works for my browsers Netscape4.7 and IE5. It's a bit of a hassle but it's okay. I just want to know how well this is supported by all browsers.

I think all 3+ browsers support it. and because no one uses 1.0 and 2.0 browsers it is well supported.

As long as the user doesn't have javascript turned off its supported by both major browsers from version 3 and up. I don't know how well Lynx or other niche browsers handle javascript support.
Its not the best option. Have you thought about moving to a free server that allows SSI? If your paying for your account and SSI isn't enabled it is time you moved. Pair.com has accounts starting at 5.00 per month. If you need something more check out MyOnlyHost.com.
