What is Input filtering in php? How it helps the developers?

Input filtering (in any language) means that you check the values a user has entered to make sure they're valid. For example, an email address should have a single @ with a certain sequence of characters that can be checked using a regular expression.
The reasons for doing include:
1. It helps the user.
2. It prevents errors in your system, e.g. you won't send an email to an invalid address.

php 5.2 has a built in support for input filtering.
but here i am eager to know more about how php 5.2 handling input filtering.I have heard that php 5.2 has a built in support for input filtering.
