ROR Website on a providers server
Hi folks,
wish you all a nice day here from germany.
As I am a ROR beginner and just went throu the book of Patrick Lenz
a rather important question started bugging me.
If I have developed a ROR dynamic website on my computer using everything necessary (Ruby, Rails, WEBRick, MySQL) then at the very end I have to transfer it to a common public webproviders server. As far as I could manage to gather information about that, none of the providers support ROR on their servers and you can bett they'll just laugh at me if I ask them to install everything necessary to run a ROR application on their public server.
So with this handycap where is the sense in developing ROR apps? Did I get anything wrong somewhere. I mean I definitly want to use ROR because its just plain fantastic but for what if I can't go to a public server.
Any suggestions are very welcomed.
Cheers
TomTiger

There are many Rails web hosts, fortunately
Here's a list: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/RailsWebHosts

Yeah thats right. The only problem is if I develop a project for a customer it's nearly ever my choice to where to host the website.

Then there are 3 options: (1) don't work for these clients (2) convince them to use other hosting (3) don't use rails.

I use mediatemple as their gridserver package comes with a 64mb RoR container. I had to go through their knowledge base to set it up but it works pretty good and the price is reasonable. It also does php4/5 and perl.
