Activate the Akismet plugin and moderate first comments (i.e select the option "Comment author must have a previously approved comment"). This cuts comment spam dramatically.

Akismet has let one spam comment through in 1.5 years on my blog. That's pretty good going...

No complaints with akismet here either. It has caught thousands of spam messages and I can literally only think of maybe 2 or 3 that have gotten through.

Askimet is definitely the answer for your spam woes, but if you need more than there's a whole bunch of spam fighting plugins here:

I just activated Askimet, it seems very good. I like the idea that it improves it's learning of how to catch spam.

Askimet does a fantastic job, however those who use trackback for spam are able to escape it. Thats why I always like to have notification of the messages that have been approved to ensure no spams makes it way to my blogs.

Shall I join in with everyone else posting in this thread and say Akismet?

Akismet performs very well on my site, but it is not enough. Sometimes, when things get bad, I turn on Bad Behavior, which stops the spam before it gets through the door. Unfortunately, Bad Behavior can misbehave itself sometimes, and keep up legitimate viewers. So it is a tough call sometimes. But there are times, that I get so tired of the spam, that I just turn it on. I use to use Spam Karma, but it appears that Akismet coupled with BB pretty much catches everything. I also moderate first comments, just in case.

Yeah, I'm planning on moving to WordPress, but we'll have to use some non-Akismet plugins to deal with spam because I can't justify the cost, at this time.

I also use Spam Karma (SK2) and I couldn't be happier.

Askimet, Spam Karma, and Bad Behavior seem to be the best contenders out there today. I have used Askimet alone for many months (almost a year by now), and it has proven to be very reliable.

I heard that people used hidden field by CSS or javascript to false proof the spambots, since most of them don't parse any CSS or JS.

The only problem with captchas and false form fields is that they can cause accessibility problems. Unfortunately, it's your real users who suffer, not the spammers - they'll just keep auto-spamming anyway.

I've been using Akismet for a few months now and it's caught all but one spam message and correctly identified all real ones. It's saved me hours of effort and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Askimet is the best plugin out there for this purpose. You should note how it comes aleady bundled with the wordpress installation plugin files to get an idea of its rating.

Gets my vote. I use the three of them together. Some spam makes it through as far as the moderation queue, but it's very rare that any actually ends up on my site.

    Spam /day = appx 40
    Spam in moderation queue/day = appx 1
Spam making it through to site = appx 1 per 5 months

Akismet is my favourite too. I use it for all the months I had the blog and it has already "killed" over 2000 comments. God I hate spammers

Spam Karma together with Askimet is a very powerfull duo. I highly recommend using both of them.

At this point those tools have prevented nearly 9,000 spams on my blog. All that viagra and porn - while I write about business. Beware, not porn industry
