As for hdr I just heard about a few weeks ago and then got photomatix.

It certainly does have its place. I just took some shots of the family room.
no matter what I did everything outside of the window was too hot (blazing white) and the hardwood floor was black but the chairs looked pretty good but still had some over / under exposure issues.

then I took a shot with the trees outside of the window in the right exposure leaving the interior too dark. Then took a shot with the hardwood floors in the right exposure.

Photomatix has two modes, blend and hdr (then use tone mapping). Using both modes I was able to come up with a good photo where you can see the trees outside, the pattern in the chairs and the grain in hardwood floors. Nothing was over or under exposed.

It also works good for forest shots where you have a lot of sun and dark shadows.

Iit does give a somewhat sureal look since you are not used to seeing photos presented that way, however the trade off is a nice evenly blended photo.

just like flash or animated gifs, it can be used for good or evil. I do like the sureal look (sometimes) and can present a subject in a way that traditional one shot photos cannot achieve. (at least not for me)

Any way the best part is, it is a new toy and excuse to waste time ;-)

I like HDR, and having a photography themd site has allowed me to view some really brilliant HDR's but i've also seen some overdone ones.

I also own hdrforum dot com, maybe someday i'll put my time into it

I came across HDR images a while ago. They're clever, but shouldn't be used for every photo. I think sometimes it creates images that look like they're out of a videogame, take this example.
