    Uptimes?

Just noticed one of our development servers here in the SitePoint offices has clocked up 250 days of uptime.

Given that it's a sadly mistreated RH 6.2 GNU/Linux box which plays mp3s 24/7 as well as a number of internal database / webserver tasks and it's not even on a UPS, I find this pretty impressive!

What have your experiences with uptimes of various OS's been?

The longest I can remember at work was close to 400 days. That scared the hell out of our Unix admins.

For most of our boxes now they have gotten into the habbit of a monthly reboot. I know that most people say you don't need to do that, but it solves a lot of memory leaks and other strange things.

It's also a lot easier to remember what was changed in the past 30 days when a server won't come back!

Two of our heavily used servers:

    Wolverine: 92 Days, 18:24
    Storm: 41 Days, 16:42

Both RH7.2 with 2.4.x Kernels, both in heavy production use by customers and both taking it in their stride.

    Two not so used ones:

    Sun1: 69 Days, 21:26
    Sun2: 69 Days, 21:28

Both Sun Netra X1 boxes not doing a lot at the moment.

    Hello Guys,

z0s0, 300 days? Thats 10 months. Pretty Impressive!

Anyways, I remember my server completed 100 days uptime. Its load was calm around 0.3-0.4. I had decided that I would make it 150 or so, but then I had a Ram Upgrade.

Since then I am always tweaking things in the server so I need a reboot almost every 1 month or so!

My webhost's server with Red Hat Linux 7.1 got up to 35, but then they needed to move it and had to shut down

Ironic though that my server box at home (which does _everything_) is on a UPS but never manages more than about 3 days. It mysteriously powers down in the middle of the night regularly. Getting quite annoying now.

Hmm actually I wonder if it's the UPS.

Why would you need to keep rebooting unless you're fiddling with hardware all the time? *nix hardly ever needs rebooting because you've changed something.

It's not bad considering the usage Wolverine gets, it was last down for a kernel upgrade to fix some problems with the RAID card. Storm was only rebooted because of some IP issues that wouldn't resolve properly.

So they aren't too bad really, about average I would say. A good place to compare them with is NetCraft.com and their web server survey, it lists uptimes of various servers and OSs.
