Structural, semantic markup is going to be the key. In the past, many designers and developers used HTML they wanted to, rather than the way it was supposed to. If you can learn how to write clean, semantic, and valid markup using as few tags as possible, you'll be in a better position to create table-free layouts. Just do not fall into the trap of replacing tables with DIV tags, because the results can easily be just as bad, if not worse, than table-based layouts.

Have you tried looking at SitePoint's HTML and CSS books? If you can get them from a local library, you'll be able to learn from them without having to spend any money.

As Dan said, don't make a common newbie mistake -- the point of table-less layouts is not to simply replace tables with <div> elements. The point is to use semantically correct markup and then use CSS to make it look the way you want it to.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is used with HTML (or XHTML) to style the page.

    Hi,

Just to re-iterate - There is nothing special about the div tag, they don't make the design do anything in particular - this presentation of the page elements is done through CSS.

If you're looking at the Sitepoint CSS books I wouldn't recommend "The CSS Anthology" - "Designing without tables" is much much better.
A good text is best to understand a concept like CSS. And you can always ask plenty of questions on the CSS forum.
