[question] how can I set up a new ftp account on our dedicated server

    Hi @all,
Anyway, can someone tell how you can set up a new ftp account on a dedicated server?

I just want to give a friend of me some webspace to put his site on without giving him root access ..

    How can I do this?

If it's a Unix based server (Linux, FreeBSD, pure Unix) just login as root and use the 'adduser' command. It can be used from any directory and is VERy straight forward, basically just enter a username, real name (not essential), password and set the shell to 'false', everything else you can just press return and use the default option.

    Hi bob,
thank you for your answer, but you have to know that I am a total newbee in server things ...

So if I write "adduser" in telnet then there is a new file: etc/ptmp created ... In this file are all kinds of datas like:

    root:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
    bin:1:1:bin:/bin:/sbin/nologin
    daemon:2:2:daemon:/sbin:/sbin/nologin
    adm:3:4:adm:/var/adm:/sbin/nologin
    lp:4:7:lp:/var/spool/lpd:/sbin/nologin
    sync:5:0:sync:/sbin:/bin/sync
    shutdown:6:0:shutdown:/sbin:/sbin/shutdown
    halt:7:0:halt:/sbin:/sbin/halt
    mail:8:12:mail:/var/spool/mail:/sbin/nologin
    news:9:13:news:/var/spool/news:

so how can I give this new account the rights I want to (like ftp) and how can I create a second account ...

Can you perhaps post a step by step instruction how to add a new account with ftp and mysql ??

I would be really happy and thankful
