How do you make a popup menu like in vBulletin (this forum as an example)?

When you are viewing a thread and you see the username listed to the left of a post, if you click the username you get a popup menu that:

    1) Has standard links
    2) But the menu is passed the user id or some variable, so each menu is specific to the username clicked on

So in my PHP page I have a list of links that is like:

    <a href="page.php?item=item1">item1</a>
    <a href="page.php?item=item2">item2</a>
    <a href="page.php?item=item3">item3</a>

    etc...

How can I make a menu where you click on the menu, and it has a standard list of links, but each link is passed the same query like "?item=item2" or some similar effect?

    Thanks

Nevermind, I got it...basically just print out a div with dynamic ids, and pass the same dynamic id to the popup script to change which div id it uses for the popup
