    Ruby console window commands

    Hi!

I'm "stuck" and don't know what to do.

Everything was fine till I tried to tip in:
    irb> 1

When I do this it drops down 1 line, but the new line is blank:
    C:\InstantRails\rails_apps>irb> 1
    _

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong ?

    MF

You cannot type irb commands at the normal command line. You have to start the irb program first:

type "irb" and then press enter.

Now the computer will type irb...> for you. Then type 1 and press enter again. This should work.

    Hey !

    Thanks Fenrir2!

    It worked.

I am trying to "follow along" with the new ROR book but this is my first go at programming and it's a little unclear sometimes for me :-)

Although Patrick has been a great help up to now, I don't want to keep bothering him.

You might find watching the video's on Rubyonrails.org and even the tutorials you can get to from there to be a little helpfull after you've read sitepoint's book. I know I needed a little more than I got in one book to really get a handle on things.

Not a problem with Sitepoints book - more of a denseness with me I have a hard time with the whole Object thing (I do with PHP as well). I think it's because I'm to old and don't think the right way

    Thanks stma!

That's a great tip, and one of the reasons I decided to join the forum.

Age: I am 41, thus my time is running out as well :-)

PHP: do you suggest me learning the basics of PHP in order to "tackel" RoR?
(it seems the deeper I get into this the more "side" issues I have to learn as well- "AJAX" was one, which in addition had 5 other little sub issues: JS, HTTPRequest, XML etc...)

Iwish Sitepoint had more videos- they really help "prime" you BEFORE a book!!

No Need of PHP. Any basic programming knowledge is enough with light OOP's concept will boost your learning curve with RoR.

PHP and RoR has no relation..
