    Stop cells from stretching

    I am working on a certain project now, building a website for a company, but this company doesn't want the website to be shown in public (afraid of someone stealing the design I guess) before it is completely finished.

    Therefore, I can't post any links or screenshots with this problem and you will have to do with me trying to explain it.

    First take a look at this setup of the tables, it is the way the website is built up:

    Code:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++
    + This is the topbar +
    ++++++++++++++++++++++
    + Search+            +
    +++++++++            +
    +       +            +
    +  Nav  +    Main    +
    +       +            +
    +++++++++            +
    + Other +            +
    + stuff +            +
    ++++++++++++++++++++++
    +   Bottom bar       +
    ++++++++++++++++++++++
    I managed to get everything to align properly, but for one thing. I built up the tables this way that the Main content is a cell in the same row as Search. It has a colspan of three and therefore also spans over the other two rows.
    The problem arises when the content is getting larger then the menu on the leftside. It causes all three cells to stretch out, something I don't want. I only want to have the cell of Other stuff to stretch with the main content. The other two should have a fixed height, which will not be altered, no matter how long the content is.

    I have already tried assigning height="100%" to the Other stuff-cell, and assigning fixed heights to both other cells, and combining these two. However, this doesn't work. I am totally stumped now, I have rebuilt the site twice from the scratch, but I can't figure it out. Any help or pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance !

    OK, split it into more tables.

    Code:
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    + This is the topbar +
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++

      ++++++++++++++++++++++++
      + +++++++++  +         +
      + + Search+  +         +
      + +++++++++  +         +
      + +       +  +         +
      + +  Nav  +  +  Main   +
      + +       +  +         +
      + + Other +  +         +
      + + stuff +  +         +
      + +++++++++  +         +
      ++++++++++++++++++++++++

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    +   Bottom bar            +
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Then you have a BIG table with 3 rows, and the middle row has another table with 2 colums. Within the left column you have another table with 3 rows. And you set the height on the top to and set the bottom one to not have a height and then the right cloumn of the second level table has no height either.

    Make sure to set valign="top" or else it will center your stuff vertically!

    Mark, I don't think it's possible to do what you want to do. I've tried it before for several hours and never found a satisfying solution (meaning, one that worked in IE6 as well as NS4). Maybe if you send me the code you're working on I can take a look at it for you.

    Most of it is working now, there is just a small portion that is not to my liking.

    Right now, the tables are looking like this:

    Code:
    +-------------------------------+
    |            Topbar             |
    +------+------------------------+
    |Search|                        |
    +------+                        |
    | Nav  |                        |
    |      |                        |
    +------+        Main            |
    |Weird |        content         |
    |empty |                        |
    |part  |                        |
    +------+                        |
    |Other |                        |
    |stuff |                        |
    +------+------------------------+
    |           Bottombar           |
    +-------------------------------+
    As you can see the only problem is the weird empty part in the left part. I just can't get rid of it, so I'll need to work on that for a bit.

    OneChance, thanks for you offer. I will propose it to my client, and I am sure he will take it into consideration.

    I'm not seeing the "weird empty part" described in Mark's previous post.

    If you look under the tip you can see there is a gap.

    Also, I fixed it for swimm.

    Snoozy, that's some creative HTML coding. Good stuff. Mark T., are you supporting NS 4.x?

    Just wondering, because the page didn't look right in NS4. I know that some people here don't support NS4. Thought you might want some help with the NS4 coding.

    I am curious to see what you mean. I will have a look myself as well.

    Is it really bad?

    Well... The search box should be sized down, a separate style sheet should be used for NS4 to get rid of the little black squares around the search box and to fix the font sizing, the cells should be forced to their respective widths, and a transparent background should be used to fix the background around the top nav.

    Hmm.. indeed you are right. I never really cared much for cross-browser compatibility, but right now I want this to work in all browsers.

    Thanks for pointing this out !
