I guess it depends on your background....
There are some really good beginners tutorials on the ruby web site.
( the Ruby in 20 minute is a good start ! )
Or one of the best books is the Pick Axe !

Yes, it will depend upon your background.
If you are new to Ruby then Peter Cooper's book - Beginning Ruby is also a good buy.
If you are coming from a Java background, the book Rails for Java Developers is a good read.
I would definitely recommend David Black's book - Ruby for Rails
