Now I have a friend who turned me on to this place.. and well she got suspended for using stock photo's from a cd she bought specifically for designers and all images were royalty free, now how is it that this http://www.sitepoint.com/marketplace/contest/693 winner can use bought stock photo and not be kicked off the site like my friend?
I'm not looking for this designer to suffer the same fate by no means I'm just truly curious what the difference is?

Am I missing something or is it just random by who gets away with it?

Isn't this something best brought up with a moderator or administrator? Seeing as the community couldn't really provide you with any tangible resolve, be it an explanation or what have you.

I'm a moderator and I can answer some of your questions. Basically, when someone initially posts a design and they use stock photos or images and don't give credit where credit is due, that is considered a copyright violation. The contest holders need to know exactly where all of their designs come from and in most cases they should always be unique to the designers.

I can't discuss the specifics of your friend or the other contest which you referenced as they don't apply to you personally.

Did your friend use the stock photo for a template/print design or for a logo?
While using such photos for templates, ads, fliers, etc. is natural (with crediting the source and applying all the TOS), using clipart and/or stock photos for logo design is forbidden - this HAS to be original artwork.
