    Porn site accessability

I didn't put this in the main CSS or accessability forums, beause it really is jsut a stray thought kind of thread...

So I was thinking about web accessability, trying to come up with a scenario where accessability wasn't required. I thought about table-based layouts, and where I've seen them the most.

then it hit me: Porn sites.

Now it's not that I'm constantly surfing for the stuff, but come on. Something like 80% of men admit to having visited a porn site, and the other 20% are liars. But I digress.

It occured to me that I remember those pages loading on a dial up connection in that tiled-table beased way. And I wondered, why would anybody build an accessable porn site? Are blind people surfing for it? And what would a blind-porn site be like?

I won't be suprised if this thread gets deleted or censored and I get in trouble. But I had to post it because, well, I happened to be in the forums and it crossed my mind.

Any thoughts, other than "What a moron?"

You would be surprised! there are such things as audio porn sites, and a lot of "blind" people are not totally blind, just partially. It is true that most adult site designers still build table heavy layouts as a lot of "adult" designers are graphics designers who just slice and export their work with little regard to anything else.

I have worked on a few adult sites over the years and site owners have always been please when their sites load 10x quicker after a css makeover.

However you make a good point, there is little incentive for adult site owners to go "accessible", adult is more about catching the users attention with compelling graphics and once you have them hooked make the sale, if a site is pulling in a nice income every day why change?

There's also something called a tactile mouse. I can see some possibilities for such a device on a porn site ...

Why? Accessibility is not only about visual impairment. Accessible means 'possible to access'. An accessible site will work (i.e., make its content, but not necessarily the design, accessible) in any user agent. It will work on a dial-up connection or a wireless mobile network. It will work on different monitor sizes. It will not require client-side scripting or proprietary/platform dependent plugins – although it may very well use those technologies to provided added value for those who support them (a concept known as progressive enhancement).

Adult sites seem to be mainly about making lots of money. The more accessible a site is, the more people can visit it and generate revenue for the site's owner. I'd say adult site owners have a great incentive to make their sites as accessible as possible.

Yes there are accessible porn sites. Many of them just use varying forms of media like audio tracks instead of images.

If they didn't have those pesky passwords they would be even more accessible

I couldn't agree more. I've been a mod on one of the big adult webmaster forums for many years and have constantly been pushing the benefits of well built accessible sites but the actual interest level has always been very low. Some adult webmasters are taking up the idea but they are still very much in a minority.

You'd think so but probably the majority of site owners fall into two categories:

    1. They hire a graphics designer to build their front end for them. Most of the time for pay to access sites a Photoshop design is just sliced and the html tables plonked into a page. Most of the graphics designers I've seen are pretty clueless about how to actually build a proper site, but there again they are "graphics" people not web designers!

    2. DIY site owners using Dreamweaver or Frontpage. They just knock up a design in the WYSIWYG and upload it - job done!

Yes adult site owners just want to make money but trying to pursuade them of the benefits is a hard job!

I might be guilty of a little over-generalization here but most porn sites are founded on the concept of exploiting people.

The sort of people who think it's alright to exploit people for personal gain probably don't have disability rights at the top of their agenda.

Web accessibility is not *just* about blind users, strike one!

Yes it would be possible to make a porn site accessible, accessible to a range of users from those with no imparements whatsoever to those with cognative, physical, or hearing impairments. just obey the same guidlines you would with any site.

I define accdessible as accessible to EVERYONE. sure blind users are a huge concern, but dont forget everyone else

You've been looking in the wrong place! You'll find that scam sites are run by the same people who also tout viagra, pharmacuticals, spyware and all the other crap. It's not in the true adult owners interst to exploit people. Think about it. You can run a scam membership and take $20 from the visitor who you know will never rejoin again. On the other hand if you charge $20 a month for a site membership and give them good regularly updated content, that member may stay for 6 months or more and gross you $180 or more.

When I was talking about people being exploited I didn't mean website visitors I was referring to the people who are paid to perform degrading acts.
