I want to use SSI for my site because I'm going to dump the frames and I don't want to spend to much time. Problem is that this is the first time I'm working with SSI so I could use some tips from you guys: the professionals!
Please give me some tips and things I should avoid and how you'll test a site using SSI.
To see what I'll have to do, take a look at my site at www.emudreams.web.com so you can see how many pages we're talking about.

Number of pages is irrelevant except to the fact that all of them would have to be changed once to handle your SSI includes.

I suggest you read How to Save Hours with SSI published by Matt Mickiewicz, one of the founders of SitePoint.

I think I was a little sleepy when I wrote that. I mean of course: 'so you can see for yourself what has to be done with SSI on this site.' My excuses for that

I've read the tutorial and I must say that it's very clear. Only question is still not answered: how can you test a site that has SSI tags in it? Can you only test it when it is on the server?

I am assuming you're on Windows 98. Pop in your Win98 cdrom and then naigate to \add-ons\pws (I think) and execute setup.exe. Follow the steps then put your shtml files in C:\inetpub\wwwroot and then go to http://localhost/file.shtml and you're all set.

DO NOT RUN ANY ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMS WHILE INSTALLING!! Trust me, you want the data on your hard drive to still be there after you install

The personal Web Server... I almost forgot I had that thing too! One question: do you have to enable SSI, or is it already enabled?
Thank you for this wonderfull idea

I am not sure if every server supports SSI, but I believe if yours does you only need to upload your files as .shtml

Mine worked fine when I did that. However, I did have to ask my administrator to add *.shtml to the IIS server so my index.shtml loads automatically when no page is specified.

I've installed Personal Web Server, and guess what? I had to install Windows again, but now everything *seems* to work just fine.
I'll test whether index.shtml is automatically loaded at Redrival. Else I'll have to ask the system administrator too to enable this.

Darn, I just found out that DreamWeaver fully supports SSI, so installing PWS was unnecessary...
Even testing the whole site can be done with DW... I guess I'll have to uninstall PWS

Why? PWS will support PERL, PHP and ASP as well.

Neh, I don't think I'll use any of those. Besides, I need to clear a lot of webspace 'cause I want to install Linux and PWS is just in the way.

Doen anyone know here how much diskspace PWS uses? If it's more than fifty Mb, I'll have to erase it.

PWS uses from 60 to 90 MB.
