    create desktop shortcut using html

I need to create a button on a intranet website that when clicked will create a desktop shortcut to a new intranet application. Is this possible with just HTML or will I need to look at javascript or php?

    Thanks,

    Dan

I think you will need to look at VBScript. I made an active desktop once (HTML document as desktop) where you could input stuff into a textarea and save it to a file. Clicking the 'save' link didn't create the file, but it wrote stuff to a file, so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to create a file too.

It might be problematic, though, because you have to make sure your users are using IE and that their security settings under Internet Options will allow them to run these scripts.

I had thought about rights and I should be able to set up an account with rights to write to the local machine. I might need to move this to the programming section and see if there is something I could write in C#/ASP.NET that would handle this.

    Thanks for the reply,

    Dan
