Your copy of XP isn't stable? Mine is rock solid on my new system, and is also rock solid on my old system that's like 4 years old by now.

If you're in Australia, I'd wait before upgrading to Vista, because chances are your ISP won't be able to connect you to broadband for another month or more.

Buy the computer with XP installed, and later upgrade to Vista !
Maybe after one year you should to get Vista. Still Vista is "Beta".

What about buying a copy of XP on eBay?
Is that even a smart thing to do?

Seems like you'd be getting a used program
    that has already been registered.

Would you be able to register a copy of
XP a second time after someone has already
    registered it a first time?

I have gotten software in the original box on eBay with no problem registering it. Read carefully and do research before hitting buy, of course.

OK, but seems to me that would be a crap shoot buying something like this on eBay as it could very possibly be used merchandise.

I guess a fellow could make sure he pays via Pay Pal and then lodge a complaint if there is a problem.

Personally, I like paying with an actual credit card so I can force a chargeback through my bank if I get ripped off.

FYI, you can use your credit card when you purchase with PayPal.

mmm, I'll have to look into that because I always thought that was for backup payments only in the event pay pal can't sucessfully debit the funds from your bank account.

one thing to watch out for if you do go with a new machine and XP...there are alot of XP Pro64 versions being installed now. Might as well go with Vista as I have found. No major AV programs work on the 64bit platform yet so I went Avast (was free) for AV. A few other bugs with software and the 64bit OS too.

I agree. Blue screens in XP are pretty much gone and if you still get them, then it's often related to bad hardware and drivers, both which are easily solved if you have finished public school.

Make a backup of all your personal data, format system partition during Vista's setup and install applications. Sorry, but what's so difficult about this, escpecially if you already have a dedicated data partition.

LOL Ignorance like this can be so funny. Anyone who has ever used a Mac knows that you just shot yourself in the foot by saying what you did

    I got my Dell!

It came in the mail, but after using it for about 2 hours I decided to return it and get a 12 inch model. That aside, my impression of XP was pretty good.

Fast, smooth interface, and felt/seemed very stable. It make a good impression on me. I didnt get to really 'move in' but it sure looks nice.

I didnt read all the replies to this but thought I would throw in what I think....

VISTA IS AWESOME BUT STAY WITH XP until all the programs are updated and vista compliant. Dreamweaver does not work with Vista, Photoshop has issues as well.

What an idiotic statement. With a software program like Parallels, you can buy a Mac and take your M$ software along for the ride. Nevertheless, I'm leaning towards parting company with Microsoft completely. So far, I've purchased a new Dreamweaver program (for Mac) and will be buying Microsoft Office for Windows. (Spreadsheets are one of the few things Microsoft does a good job of.)

Other than that, I'm mostly using open source software or software that came with my Mac.

I will likely continue using my PC (with XP), if only to test websites in Internet Explorer, until it expires. I don't anticipate ever upgrading to Vista, though I can't rule it out entirely.

On another note, Vista + EBay sounds like one lethal combination!

Wow if everyone thought the way most do, everyone in here would still be driving a model T. I would rather opt for the ferrari. I have had all the new operating systems as they came out, windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, xp, and now Vista. With a clean install it works great, and in a very short time there will be a lot of software that will work. Oh and anyone that buys software from ebay, beware. Everyone listens to the hype, without new software we would not be chatting here today.

Well, if the model T still works . . .

Did I say my real car is 17 years old and runs perfectly and does everything I need it to!

Bottom line . . . if it works, don't fix it.

Actually most people reading this thread aren't using vista, and we are all chatting quite well...

For those having trouble installing vista, click here. They will show you how to correctly install it in only 2 minutes

    Mine hasn't hit 100,000 yet! I'm a real hermit.
