Commands for Downloading linked files from a web site

Hello everyone ---- this is my first post!
    Happy New Year to all.

Please help - I've searched these forums and also Googled the subject and read the books. No joy.

I have built a web site (in Dreamweaver 8) and want the visitor to "click here" to download a .pdf file, to their own computer, that is stored on the site.

Would someone kindly point me in the right direction, or (better) tell me how to do this? And as an extra, I would REALLY like to have a little window pop up and tell the visitor that the file is being downloaded that shuts down when the process has finished.

Am I being thick here? But thanks for any feedback....

    Best wishes

    Well..
    1. You can zip the pdf and upload it and link to the zipped file. OR
    2. Beside the link, provide them with "Right click and select save link" and save to your desktop.. or whatever.

    Classic, welcome to the forums!

This really depends on your knowledge level. You can write a script that will prompt the dialog window to download the link, but the easiest way is probably to just provide a link to you PDF file and instruct visitors to right click and choose 'save as' to save it to their machine.

    HTML Code:
<a href="file.pdf">PDF File</a> - Right click and choose 'save as' to download.

Thank you both so much for replying. Junjun, I did what you suggested (maybe the same as conradical) and it worked a treat. Um - er- I feel really stupid as, with the benefit of hindsight, it was all so easy. I hope you understand and I thank you again for your welcoming reply.
