Starting off a wallpaper site - Need Advice

    Hi,

I am a graphic designer with sound html and flash knowledge. I wish to start off a wallpaper site that has pretty much all the bells and whistles of the new-age sites. Though I can design excellent static webpages, I have no knowledge of backend programming languages like php or database driven websites.

I initially thought of going for standard scripts like Coppermine photo gallery or 4images or even 'gallery' offered by standard webhosts. But I am not sure about whether I would get what I intended if I use them. Will these scripts cause a reduction in quality of the images when they embed them in pages..?

Being a wallpaper site, I would want users to have a choice to download them in various resolutions. I am not clear whether the scripts mentioned above will allow that. Moreover I am not entirely satisfied with the way these pre-made script structure the galleries.

I am pretty much impressed with the system that the following site has:
    www.santabanta.com/wallpapers
I would want to do something similar.

So any ideas how I should start off..? Would you recommend these scripts like coppermine or 4images if I want to develop a hi-fi site in earnest. Or would you suggest that I hire a coder to help me.? Ideas on the type of hosting plan that I should choose is also welcome...

    Thanks.

Hi aurictitan and welcome to the forums.
Coppermine and other premade scripts are very good but if you want a site that has the bells and whistles YOU want, you would be far better hiring a competant coder to do the backend.

That way you can get exactly what you want/ need without hacking pre-existing software to pieces.

will there be any quality reduction if I use coppermine.

will it affect SEO..? will it get a lower page rank..?

by how much can the standard galleries be customised..? Can you show some sites that have used a fair degree of customisation..?

With any image resampling done online there will be some degree of quality loss whether it is custom written or prepackaged.

That depends more on the way the rest of the site is written rather than the way the gallery software works.

By definition, something like coppermine and other php based applications are open source meaning that everything and anything can be changed to suit your own needs.
