I have many year's of experience with HTML Editors. I have notice that there aren't many good editors out there. Although, there are 2 editors that can bring up to my standards. Dreamweaver is an excellent tool, but due to its price, its kind of a downfall. My best choice is EVRSoft 1st Page 2000, because 1st its free, 2nd it has many great features. Both these tools are excellent.

1stPage sure is an interesting program...here's how I see it all:
WYSIWYG Editors (FrontPage/DreamWeaver):
These are major time savers, but some of their features (Dream Templates maybe, FP Extensions/Themes/Shared Borders) produce sloppy, unprofessional code...but they have their place for the busy developer who needs to put up a rather simple, unimportant site.
Simple HTML Editors:
This includes TextPad and NotePad basically...where all the coding is done by hand, and then uploaded with a simple FTP program...fine if you have time on your hands...reduces load time.
Compination WYSIWYG/HTML Editors:
1stPage 2000 is the only program I've seen like this...it's not an WYSIWYG editor...but I wouldn't consider it a plain text editor...I think of it as inbetween NotePad and DreamWeaver, or TextPad and FrontPage...you can type it all in code, or use a few of their add-ons (very useful)...or have it insert some tags for you...time-saving, but you have total control over the code.
It all depends on who you are. 1stPage is very unique, I consider it the only one in it's "class" of programs right now...

Personally, I am a WYSIWYG guy, coding takes too long for me. Even though I learned HTML first (well I didn't have a choice back in 1995) I cannot code anything - whether it be HTML, Javascript, PHP, ASP, C++, Perl, etc.
I would have to agree with Aidan. I am a WYSIWYG designer myself. Frontpage2000 is like my right arm! I'd die without it. Although it seems that experienced webmaster don't care much for the program.
I am also a WYSIWYG user. (Composer) I started out at Geocities using their advanced html editor and writing all the html myself. I was very happy to stumble across Composer. While we are on the topic..is Composer the only WYSIWYG where you have to enter each html tag one at a time or is that standard??

This is awesome editor all kinds of languages, not only html. Very recommend it to all! - shareware. $30 after 30 days, but still woking after that. Im using it for php, html, javascript, java, perl a bit...
it has FTP uploads/downloads, compiler, build in explorer (quick preview) and its very small 1mb. and fast to load.

What I mean is..Composer will only allow you to enter an HTML tag name and any attributes and perameters for one tag only per insert. i.e. <html> counts as one insert..<head> counts as another. If you try to paste two tags together i.e. <html><head> it looks at it as a premature close of tag It can get real tiresome if you have to cut and paste a long code into one of your pages.

I haven't experienced this with Composer myself, but then again I haven't used it in about a year.
This is unique only to Composer. Try the trial for Dreamweaver (at http://macromedia.com/software). 30 days to see if this WYSIWYG editor is for you. It is definately worth the price.
FrontPage also is a candidate. FrontPage Express is probably installed on your computer (it comes with Internet Explorer). If you don't have it, you can download FrontPage Express for free at http://microsoft.com
Thanks for the advice Aidan! To be quite honest with you I downloaded Dreamweaver a couple of weeks ago, and haven't had much time to play with it. I have been using Composer since about March and it is the only HTML editor I have ever used, so I have gotten use to it. When I opened Dreamweaver it seemed like there was alot to learn, so I didn't mess with it too long, but I think I will try to put some time aside to get familiar with it.
