    One that handles plain text and doesn't try to impose fancy formatting. If it can colour code the keywords and built-in objects for you as well then that's a bonus.

    Aptana - colour-coding, indenting, auto-complete, context-sensitive help, popup tooltips with function definitions, code overview, generally brilliant IDE.

    Also great for HTML and CSS.

    On a Windows platform, I highly recommend Notepad++. It will correctly highlight Javascript syntax even when it's embedded in a .html file; not many editors I've seen do this, let alone free ones. The download is less than 1MB and it's a brilliant program.
