Open 1 window, whilst closing another

I already know how to open a window, however I have 2 problems, one being, what do you need to do to make the source window close, and the other one being, how could I get this to work in a Seacrh applet, here is the HTML i am currently using:

<applet archive="search/search.jar" code="SearchApplet4ech.class" width="100" height="40">
<param name="TIMED" value="true">
<param name="RESOURCE.FILE" value="search/out.txt">
<param name="TARGET" value="_blank">

How could the document.close() be implemented into this?? thanks very much.

Oh, and P.S - How would I display an Image insted of just the basic "launch" button which it has??

why are you still using Java???? I think everything you can do with Java on webpages can be achieved with other formats which load faster and take less cpu.

The problem is that you have to hard code the closing in the Java applet.

Usually in JavaScript, you just write windowName.close();

if its (class) doesnt have an option to do so, you will not be able to do it. If you got .java files, then you just write some code.
