    Unsure.

Next person is a Monty Python fan.

    Off Topic:

True. I'd explain myself a bit better, but I'm not really sure what I think on the matter. I think most people adhere to the rule "do not to others what you would not welcome upon yourself" but I don't have an awful lot of faith in humanity these days. Very few people seem to be prepared to be genuinely selfless or to give something up for the greater good.

    Next person loves philosophy!

    Off Topic:

    R. There is a real problem with communication these days. The term selfish has two meanings. The definitions must be cleared before one can talk about it. In my book, the kind of selfishness I am talking about, is a virtue, the self-sustaining of me. The me that is number one. Now, the selfishness you are talking about, is this idea that there is a requirement to give up something in order to further others, and this would be mandatory for a person to be a good person. A prerequisite of being virtues.

I have a lot of trust in the basic decency of people. There are always instigators of violent causes, always have been, always will be, unless some day all of humanity is starting to truly think and not just follow.

False, my little brother inherited it. And it wasn't a teddy bear, it was a red monkey.

In theory, but where I come from the choice is always atrocious. People end up voting for the guy least likely to completely mess the country up. I don't know why there are no decent candidates (well, there are a few in congress, but they're certainly a minority). They must exist, in a country of almost 30 million.

Next person loves a discussion over a beer.

    Off Topic:

Raffles, let us have a beer. Much better to have a nice talk that way. But yes, there are many capable people who would make brilliant leaders, but if the base is not there to support them, why would those people want to sacrifice themselves to the rules of the mob and their machine of bureaucrats?

To have an influence and to have an effect, the capable must work at the foundation, getting the ideas accepted at a broad base, then you can elect a proper leader. The universities are always a breeding ground for all sorts of ideas, and that is where good and bad ideas are bred and fostered, that is also the right place.

We just have come through a long period, worldwide that is, where a rather confused base is being laid. Out of this confusion will come either a phoenix or a dust devil. It all depends on how willing the young students are to set a firm direction, as a whole, looking at it in a generalized way.

Very true. Few things are better than to sit in a small, quiet pub with friends and talk over some decent beer.

Next person drinks heavily over Easter.

    Off Topic:

What often happens in universities is that people have big ideas, they join the communist/socialist party, they go to protests against the government, they spit in the face of capitalism and authority, but when they enter their final year and go to the careers fairs, they leave all that behind and become corporate whores. I've seen it happen to several people in my year.

People would want to sacrifice themselves precisely in order to destroy the status quo and turn the country around. That is, of course, if they believe they're not alone in the cause and they believe in people on the whole being decent.

I honestly don't think it can be that difficult to simply set your sights on improving the current state of affairs, but so many politicians get embroiled in filth that it worries me just how awful it must be. I often toy with the idea of going into politics simply because I get so annoyed with the waste.

Don't. One man can do nothing. Only a group of people can try doing something, and still that's a rough fight. The fact is, the majority of the corrupt mechanism will either turn you to their side, or if you resist, they will destroy you.

^^ False -- I do not drink heavily for any reason. Easter is meaningless for me anyhow.

Next person loves all those days of gluttony.

    Off Topic:

In my younger years I wanted to go into politics as well, but then I realized why that would be a waste of my time. All you can change is at the level of the "top soil". I rather have long talks with young people, support my particular brand of direction that I want to succeed, to let the issues spread and ferment and spread and grow.

I am convinced that that is the only way to effect change.

True -- and then it is either very much uphill or down hill, depending of the person that I impressed, I am too opinionated to stay in the graces of a broad crowd.

Next person would like to find the goose that lays the golden eggs.
