Plug-ins are components that the user downloads and installs on their machines. They do effect download time. I have seen plug-ins up to several megabytes in size. You need to program your plug-in to do what you want. These are created in C++, Visual Basic (Often referred incorrectly as ActiveX controls), Java or any other compileable programming language. The size of your finished plug-in depends on its purpose and your programming skills. Plug-ins must be registered with the operating system to work properly as well. Also you need to get a Certificate of Authenticity from Verisign or Thawte before many people (myself included) will allow a plug-in to be installed on their PC's.

There are hundreds of plug-ins available for both Netscape and Internet Explorer already so unless you have a really unique purpose, you can probably find one that fills whatever need you have.

How would I go about creating something like he did......I would just want it to say Learn to Earn, flashing in and out or across the screen, nothing too complicated.., before it went to the main page of the site.
If a visitor does not have a plug in then they would just go the main page

How would I go about getting the tools and then designing the program to do this.....is there somewhere online that does it automatically or is special software required to create those.
I think it looks great and would like to have something similar.

Freesources.net uses flash. You would have to buy Macromedia Flash from the store to create flash movies. There is a free trial at http://macromedia.com/software/

Learning Flash takes time, so it might be a good idea to have someone else do it for you.

Sometimes GIF animations will be able to do this - it will be compatible on all graphical browsers, but increases load time at times.

I am almost positive that Flash 4 is the only way to create Flash animations.

You can have your computer downloading at night, or you could ask someone else to do it.

    scarlet,

Create or get one? You can't just get one...you have to create one, and as a few have mentioned already, you have to use that program you've downloaded to do so.

There is no easy way around it...it takes a lot of money (for the software) and a heckuva lot of time...as well as practice...and even then you might not catch onto it...and yes, it increases loading time.

If you have the skills for it, a simple animated GIF graphic might be better suited to the task at hand...

Flash is frequently added to CD's distributed with Graphic Design magazines sold at Bookstores everywhere. It might be more worthwhile to purchase a magazine.

Also if you download a program like GetRight, you will be able to recover from a partial download if your disconnected in the middle without losing precious time by starting over.

I didn't even think of that.

I have used both GetRight and Go!Zilla, and both are great. I personally prefer Go!Zilla because it has more features and a better interface, but that's up to you.

    Hello,

So happy my site is involved in a conversation! Thanks Scarlet!!

Well I think I can help you out here. There are to ways:
    - the Macromedia way (recommended)
You buy Macromedia Flash4 or download the trial (I started with the trial too) and you get started. Tutorials are found at http://freesources.net/authoring/flash4/tutorials
    - the Adobe way
Adobe recently released LiveMotion 1.0. You can make SWF animation with it too, but it has not as many features as Macromedia Flash4. It has the same price as the first and you can download a trial at www.adobe.com

Hope this helps... Of course if you don't want to ge trough all that hassle you can ask someone in this forum to make one for you in exchange for button impression, credit, link, etc.

    Hi all
I want to start by saying thank you to all in here this is by far the best place to get help on the Internet. Hats off to wluke.

I am still trying to download flash 4, I only have a 56.6 modem and it takes a long time. I almost had it last night but got disconnected at about 80%. I am going to try and download it again tonight hopefully I will get it.
I also checked out the adobe suggestion, I am also going to download that trial because I am already familiar with certain adobe products it might be easier for me to learn how it works (easier than learning flash).

The launch date for the site I am working on is September 1,00 , it is for students at Concordia University who are enrolled in certain marketing courses. I am doing this site for the prof. of these courses, for free, to get some experience and to get references for another site I want to design for the school next year (still no pay just lots of experience)
Anyway, I am downloading the software in the HOPES that I can create it myself if I cannot I plan to take tinyitn up on the offer to do it for me. I am attending school full time all summer and am finding that between homework and the web-site deadline my time is short(I didn t mention social life because I don t have a life). The prof is just now starting to sent me content to insert into pages that I have set up..(this is why the site seems so hollow) and since he is a last minute kinda guy he will probably swamp me with work the last few weeks of August so no vacation for me this year.
Also I would like to mention a thanks to lief for doing that animation for me...I am going to try and use in the site perhaps in the password area. (passwords are mark455 and mark480) These are the course codes of the two courses that will covered on the site. There is not much info there yet as I am waiting on the prof to give it to me but if anyone would like a look go ahead.
I am also planning on creating links to sitepoint and to freesource as well as a variety of other good resource sites for constructing web pages which I found through this forum.....these will be placed in the build a site section, the prof asked me to compile links and info for that area of the site and I will be more invloved in the content of that section than the others.
Any way thank you all again for all the help now and in the future, hopefully in a few more months (ok maybe years) I ll be the one answering alot of these questions instead being the one asking them.

    Scarlet
ps. tinyitn....I'll be in touch shortly and thank you sooooooooo much.

    Just thought I'd brag...

I have downloaded the following trials from Macromedia:
    -Dreamweaver 3 (twice)
    -Fireworks 3
    -Flash 4 (twice)
    -Authorware

And that was on a 26.4 too.

Now that I have had my share of bragging, let me say that most of Adobe's products have the same interface (Pagemill looks like Photoshop etc).

I use a product called ANFX it is produced by StepaheadSoftware. http://www.stepaheadsoftware.com/

It looks a lot like a Flash product but requires no plug-in and does not effect download time much. Also itís quite a bit cheaper then Flash.

Check it out, it mite work for you.

    Hi
Ok, I have downloaded get right.......That went well, I installed it and then used to download flash4....IT WORKED, YEA!!
I did my first animation......not bad considering it was my first...of course I did stay up all night....dark circles are ok when you spend all your time with computers......
Finally I used the code from Leif to set up the splash page...but the swf file would not exectue. Here is the code, I assume I must change it because it is not displaying an image but running a file...can anyone help me with what the new code should be.
    Thank You all
    Scarlet

I think that code is totatally wrong... You should use the <embed> tag to insert Flash in a webdocument. Here's the code:
    ---
    <embed width="100" height="100" src="splash.swf">
    ---
You should put it between the <body> tags of your page and change the width and heigth. If the path to the swf file is wrong (splash.swf) change it too..

    It should work than...
