Question Does anyone actually use threaded view for forums?

I realized today I have never once used a threaded (or hybrid) view on any forum I have ever visited unless just checking it out to see what it was and immediately switching back.

I understand the indented reply comment systems you see on some forum system (check out the forums at Drupal.org for an example). Those types of systems allow you see who replied to whom while still in a mostly linear format...
But threaded view that shows only 1 comment at a time or a single group of comments seems straight out of 1990, back when pages took forever to load and we had to walk 15 miles in the snow every morning to get to school.

What do you say? Have you ever used a threaded or hybrid view? Do you think either still serves a purpose with today's modern Internet?

I used to use threaded view on a site that was running UBBthreads (ugh) since I could follow individual discussions (the particular forum's members were not very fond of using the "quote" feature); however I switched to linear once I got my own Internet connection (sucks that it's dialup) so I could read everything at once.

I like linear mode so I can see everything at once. It's easier to follow.

I prefer linear, had never even tried threaded until now.

I've used threaded view in the past, but that was only with forums in which threaded was the only option. Linear is my preferred method to view.

Threaded view can be very beneficial, though. There are times when discussions can get quite fragmented going off on different tangents... threaded mode often can make such discussion segments much easier to follow.

I much prefer linear view forums. If I need to refer to what someone specific said I'll quote them, and in my forums if a topic does get too fragmented then I'll split some of the posts and make a new topic. Threaded view forums are far too complicated.

I completely agree with that. I think based on the results here, I'm just going to disable threaded and hybrid view from my vBulletin forums, it's just more clutter and I'm trying to clean up the interface a bit.

I've also used threaded view in the past on forums where it was the only available option, but I hated immensely since I had to click on a link and reload the page to view each of the replies. I'm sure it could be done better these days with AJAX or something like that, but I much prefer plain old linear view anyways.
