Markup validation

I have created an empty webpage with a title
(Peter de Wit's Cafe). It was quite an achievement for me merely to find out how to get that far, and to upload it. I will now work out how to put some content in!!!!!!!

My problem is that when I tried to validate the html with W3C Markup Validation Service, the result was as follows:

"Error line 7 column 6 end tag for "html" which is not finished"
It then indicates that ">" is missing from the end of the closing tag "</html (> in red underlined).

When I checked the original in textedit it is correctly entered as </html>.
So I dont know what to make of it.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Can you give us a URL so we can look at the page? That might help get you an answer.

More than likely it is not that tag itself but something earlier in the code that confuses the validator.

This is the first time I tried this. It took a long time just to work that out, even without any content. I needed to find out if it would work !!!!!

Yeah, the lack of the opening and closing BODY tags tripped up the validator (I'd say confused, but it's really not, since the BODY element is required).

btw, the url you give is only to the file on your computer and, no, we can't get to it.

Thanks very much for adviced re my markup.

That was an excellent tip about putting a body element in.

You might be interested to know there was a further problem which I have now resolved.

It was neccessary to input the charset=utf-8 details inside the head element. Other people might find that that useful to know when building a site for the first time in XHTML.

My html has now been succesfully validated1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I call that a good result.
