    Newbie trying to work out a problem

    I am a VERY newbie...I have never written anything but easy html in asp pages and I have been given what may be a simple fix. I have a page that I need to pass a "GUID" from one page to another.

    The code that I have constructed that opens the page fine is this:

    Response.write "<IMG src='images/seperator.jpg' height='36' width='6' align='bottom' border='0' >"
    Call NewWin("/folder1/folder2/index.asp", "ref_guide", "refguide", "ref_guide.bmp", "Help Reference Guide" )

    It passes the page information and opens a new window where I have a menu on the left and a target page on the right...but it doesn't pass the GUID to both the frame and it's menu in the index.asp page. When I add the following...

    ("/folder1/folder2/index.asp?GUID=' & strGUID &'", ) it gives an error message.

    How do I pass the GUID?

    Help?
    Thanks!
    Lynn

    passing GUID to frame style...

    I appreciate your post...I figured that one out simultaneously...so it was nice to see that what I came up with was correct. :-)

    Now what is happening is that when I click on the button that passes that link/info/GUID - I get a page that has frames...the menu on left...info on right.

    But the GUID isn't passing in the "Help Documentation" piece...

    <% OPTION EXPLICIT
    Response.ExpiresAbsolute=#January 1, 1980 00:00:00#
    %>
    <!-- #include file = "basehref.asp" -->

    <%

    Response.Write "<link rel='stylesheet' type='text/css' href='styles/web.css'>"
    Response.Write "<TABLE class='menu'><TR>"

    Response.Write "<tr><td><table class='menucontainer'><tr><th class='menuheader'><a href='../Help/Web_UserGuide.doc' onmouseover='self.status='Web Instructions';return true' onmouseout='self.status='';return true' target='mainframe'><span style='color: #010758;'>Web Instructions</span></a></th></tr>"
    Response.Write "<tr><td class='menuitem'>Instructions on how to use the Web web application</td></tr>"
    Response.Write "</table></td></tr>"

    Response.Write "<tr><td><table class='menucontainer'><tr><th class='menuheader'><a href='../Help/faq.html' onmouseover='self.status='Web FAQ';return true' onmouseout='self.status='';return true' target='mainframe' ><span style='color: #010758;'>Web FAQ</span></a></th>"

    Response.Write "<tr><td class='menuitem'>A list of acronyms and abbreviations followed by their definitions.</td></tr>"

    Response.Write "<tr><td class='menuitem'>Help Documentation</td></tr>"

    Response.Write "</TABLE>"

    The info referring to the "Help Documentation" -

    Thanks!

    error message

    The window opens in a new window - rather than the frame to the right and the URL shows: https://website/fileman/default.asp?GUID=

    the GUID not being passed here...AND then the page states,
    "An invalid files section was passed to this application. Please try again."

    Fixed the 'open in target' problem...BUT

    Still having a problem with the following:

    Response.Write "<tr><td><table class='menucontainer'><tr><th class='menuheader'><a href='https://website/fileman/default.asp?GUID=' &strGUID ,&Section=PUBLIC_FILES&strPath=https://website/wwwroot/PUBLIC_FILES/folder1/Helpdesk Documentation' target='main_edit' onmouseover='self.status='Joint Documentation';return true' onmouseout='self.status='';return true'><span style='color: #010758;'>Helpdesk Documentation</span></a></th>"
    Response.Write "<tr><td class='menuitem'>Helpdesk Documentation</td></tr>"
    Response.Write "</table></td></tr>"

    The GUID appears to pass to the index.asp which hosts the menu.asp reference...but doesn't appear to pass it forward to the left navigation menu...which executes the above code.

    How do I tell the index.asp page to pass the GUID so that the menu.asp will open in the main_edit side of the page?

    Thanks!
    Lynn

    Lynn,

    You don't have to Response.Write everything. Close the current ASP block (with &#37;>) and just write it all out as HTML. When you need to add the value of an ASP variable, put <%=myVariable%> inside your HTML and it will show up.

    Here is your code the way I have described. Your problem was a missing quotation mark and & symbol. There were also some </tr> tags missing which I added:
    Code:
    <%
      ' some ASP code goes here then I close the ASP block
    %>
    <tr>
      <td>
        <table class='menucontainer'>
          <tr>
            <th class='menuheader'>
              <a href='https://website/fileman/default.asp?GUID=<%=strGUID%>&Section=PUBLIC_FILES&strPath=https://website/wwwroot/PUBLIC_FILES/folder1/Helpdesk Documentation' target='main_edit' onmouseover='self.status='Joint Documentation';return true' onmouseout='self.status='';return true'>
                <span style='color: #010758;'>Helpdesk Documentation</span>
              </a>
            </th>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td class='menuitem'>Helpdesk Documentation</td>
          </tr>
        </table>
      </td>
    </tr>
    <%
    ' more ASP code can go here if I want
    %>
    PS, I don't think your strPath parameter will work as its full of slashes and spaces and stuff, try encoding it first:
    Code:
    <%
    path = Server.URLEncode("https://website/wwwroot/PUBLIC_FILES/folder1/Helpdesk")
    %>
    <a href='https://website/fileman/default.asp?GUID=<%=strGUID%>&Section=PUBLIC_FILES&strPath=<%=path%>' target='main_edit' onmouseover='self.status='Joint Documentation';return true' onmouseout='self.status='';return true'>

    Jim? What if there are multiple paths? the first part of the path is different than the second part...two different path resources.

    Well... I THOUGHT it was working...appears that it is not. And not passing the GUID to each frame.

    Back to the drawing board.
