    Time for a change

Well I have just been told to cut my credit card in half as a result of my host (HR) and so I am considering putting myself through the stress of changing host. I have looked at a load of places but have found none that really inspire much confidence in me.

    I need:
    • PHP4
    • Unlimited mySQL db's
    • 50mb+ space
    • Email
    • Autoresponders
    • Free (or cheap) Domain Parking
    • 5gb+ bandwidth

A UK based host would also be PREFERABLE but not essential. Furthermore there is the potential that I will need more very small individual accounts for client sites.

Can someone recommend a company that will do this, and actually do it well?

    Thanks.

Have you checked out KDAWebservices.com? If they don't have what you want, you may be able to cut a deal.

That's what I was thinking. I don't know too many hosts who truthfully offer unlimited ... anything. Matt, I switched from HR last month and it has been a great move for me. I went to VenturesOnline. Along with them, I can recommend HostMatters.

Point 1; I fail to see the need for unlimited MySQL databases. Nor have I ever seen more than 25 databases being needed.

Point 2; MySQL databases seem to the the one 'unlimited' thing that hosts truely live upto.

Point 3; Read points 1 and 2 until you get point 3.

i'm not even using them yet (just a couple weeks), but after seeing everyone on here, vB's forum, and everywhere recommend them, i know VenturesOnline will ROCK! 50MB/5000MB is $10. only 2 DBs though. i used to want more, and it would be nice just for organization. but, really, you can have pretty much as many tables as you want in 1 DB.

that would be awesome if mjames, weird, and me were all at VO. he he he. but, seriously, they really seem to be great. just ask Marc.

When I say unlimited mySQL I don't actually mean I need like 400 db's -- all I mean is that if I need to add one, they aren't going to charge me for it. At the moment I use 5 and at HR it was instant creation and all that stuff.

Wayne:- I have been chatting to Karl about KDA... I assume you would recommend them? I have lots of good stuff about him/them and he is doing a great special deal at the moment to get the "basic" account cheaper. Plus its UK based and a fellow Sitepointer

mjames:- thanks for the companies -- I'll check them out.

mjames -- did you have any problems cancelling your HR account?

I have been visiting their site for the last few days and their trouble ticket system is down. I have done it through a different page now, I was just wondering how you did it.

The only good thing is they can't charge me anymore because my credit card has been destroyed.

I'm not on the look out for a new host right now, but I'd have no qualms about going to Karl if I were.

Aside from the fact that he's in the UK, which is handy, I'd feel much happier dealing with somebody I sort of 'know' rather than a total stranger.

Instead of adding a new DB you could always add a new table in a DB.

I signed up with Aletia a couple of weeks ago and they are very good. Some people have had problems with support, but I don't think it is bad. You can use 10 DBs

I cancelled once I got my site running on VO and I was told my account was cancelled. I have yet to find out if they will stop charging me, but I have nothing to make me think they would. So no, no problems cancelling it.

I sent in a trouble ticket, and they have responded asking me to verify it. I don't know why but I have done it so I guess I wait and see what they say.
