Keyword Optimization: Highest Traffic vs. Highest Conversion Rate

When choosing keywords, is it better to choose those which generate the most traffic or those that generate the most sales?

It's up to you. Do you want traffic or sales (assuming that traffic doesn't always = sales)?

I'd choose 1 vistor leading to 1 sale over 1,000 visitors and no sales.

    Yes.

I guess it depends on your business model and how valuable visitors are that don't convert into a sale. For instance, if you could rank for a slightly off-target keyword that would increase visitors by ten-fold, are there opportunities to partner with a company and sell leads? Or can you run some CPM advertising so that all value is not lost on visitors who don't stay long?

Generally you don't want to go after the keywords that convert at a low rate (particularly true in PPC), but phrases are going to fall on a gradient of relevance. Try to think creatively and you may be surprised at what may come.

You don't want to focus on either, you want to focus on the keywords with the greatest ROI.

If you can actually measure the difference between conversions and traffic that's a good start. Now make a decision of X investment to Y revenues and you'll be set.

If you are selling banner ad impressions then you need traffic.

If your product has a small market then you need quality traffic not high traffic.

If your product is more of an impulse item that anybody "might" buy at any time then you should go for traffic.

If you plan on doing ppc advertising then make sure you are going for quality traffic based on quality keywords and not keywords that generate the most traffic as you'll pay for alot of clicks with no purchases.

    Good luck.

If you want to earn from adsense or simillar way, you need traffic. On the other hand of you are selling something, go for quality traffic.

If your site generate revenue from both ways, go for traffic.

PS: I have two dating websites, one recievs 700+ visits from google for less targeted keyword and other recievs 5-10 visits from altavista for very targeted keyword. And net revenue of second site is better than first one.
Btw, I sell memberships and both site are approx simillar.
