    Question Degrees for web design?

(I hope this isn't in the wrong forum)

I would like to get at least an AA degree, preferrably a BA degree, in design.

Basically, I just want to know if anyone is familiar with the different areas you can get your degree in.

I want something in the web/multimedia design area.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Web Design is pretty basic, and I doubt you'll find many, if any, degree programs in "Web Design." Especially above an associates level.

That being said you could also find an associates degree in desktop publishing, which may include some HTML (not what you want).

If you want to be a good designer you need a background in traditional design. The best thing you can do is get a bachelors degree in Graphic Design, while at the same time teaching yourself HTML and CSS etc. You could also teach yourself Flash, and or get certifications in any of the above.

The technical aspects of web design are rather rudimentary when compared with the artistic abilities needed to be good at it.

On the other hand if you want to be a web developer, you can again get certifications in Macromedia in ColdFusion, Microsoft in ASP (I think? I honestly don't know if MS offers it) or other such web scripting programs. The best degree for you would be one in Information Technology. Stay clear of computer science, as it will focus more on high level computing, which is much different from the light scripting you do with websites.

Im doing a BSc In Multimedia, Production and Technology which has web design as one of its many aspects, including the tech side of the field, which I have found useful and helps to break up the web element which I am most active in.

I have found its great to have a little background in networking, audio and video etc etc technology to accompany the raw skills.

I'm also studying BSc Multimedia Production and Technology (same uni as glenplake)

it is a good course to give you a grounding in multimedia but as with anything it doesnt teach you in enough detail how to do the really cool stuff.

You've just gotta knuckle down and teach yourself.

But atleast you get to have BSc after your name eh :-)

Well, I personally think that having a degree or not won't change the money you will get. Having a degree only helps you getting better results, but even if you don't have a degree, and you have good result, you will get paid for the result, and not for the studies you have done. I'm 15 years old, and many of my clients think i'm a professional graphic designer.
I think you should (well i'll do like this) practice webdesign as a part time job.

What do ya think of this ?

I do agree with you Brian but I have learnt some things at University that have helped me enourmously and that I wouldnt have learnt anywhere else even if I had just gone and taught myself in my spare time or in a part time job as you say.

We learn social skills, presentation skills, personal and professional skills, have great access to a huge range of resources as well as other skills that I would not have made myself learn other wise sucj as Java, C, Electronics, Sound and Audio Technology and have been taught Graphic Design irrespective of the web.

But hey I might be slightly bias because I LOVE University, but I believe its a great experience all round, not just in the subject you are reading!
